We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kennay Powell. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kennay below.
Alright, Kennay thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How do you feel about asking friends and family to support your business? What’s appropriate, what’s not? Where do you draw the line?
I don’t agree with Asking Friends and Family to support your business. I’m a firm believer if they want to support you and your brand they will! I also believe that everything is not for everybody. If someone is not into Name Jewelry, I am not expecting them to buy name jewelry because I am selling it. Support is more than a purchase a referral, repost, share, comment, like and subscribe is also support. If you want to support me in any way, I am appreciative. I have a solid support system. They show up for me! I’m not focused on who’s not.
Kennay, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Kennay Powell. I am the Owner of Charmedbykp. I have been in business for 4 years. Charmedbykp have three different collections of things I love. My first collection was jewelry. My second collection was Makeup. Our third collection is candles. Originally, I wanted to be a makeup artist! 2017 I was trying to figure out what’s for me. I practice every day to do eyeshadow and sent my friends pictures, but I just could not get it right lol Maybe it was not my time. I wanted my business name to be Dream Beauty and Cosmetics, but my friends said its cliche! I was not consistent at all, so I gave up. Fast forward 2 years later I came up with an idea to sell jewelry. The first jewelry I started selling was bracelets. Custom bracelets for occasions or just mommy and me bracelets. I also started making jewelry with photos of loved one people have lost. One day my sister Ko asked me why don’t you sell name earrings? She gave me my first vendor and the rest were history. Now I have a whole collection of name Earrings, Necklaces, Anklets, Bracelets. My name earrings are our best seller. We also been featured in a music video! Once the accessory collection made money itself, I circled back around for my original idea which is makeup. I started a cosmetic collection 2021. I sell vegan makeup products none of my products are tested on animals. I love to make reels, tutorials, and take pictures using my products. Now that I am a PRO with doing my own makeup using my products and I receive ton of compliments from everyone. People ask me to do their makeup for events. 2023 I will become a PRO makeup artist! that is my goal. My cosmetic collection has everything you need except primer and an eyeshadow pallet but that will come soon. We are actually rebranding. New Logo new products new everything. Our last collection is candles. Candles are home essentials! I sell soy candles which are better for the environment and also burn longer. My candle sells out every time I restock. Once you have a charmedbykp candle you can’t go back!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I have lost money in my business. I spent money on inventory without focusing on marketing. You can’t sell your products without good marketing strategies. You have to learn your target audience. Make your products stand out. Learn how to get the consumers attention.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I started building my audience on Instagram with videos! If you want to catch someone eye, make a video. I’ve made funny videos, unboxing, tutorial, product videos, etc. The people want to see how the products look in person and how it will be beneficial for them.
