Kenna Bouvet, Acupuncturist and Owner at Earth + Sky
We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kenna Bouvet. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kenna below.
Hi Kenna , thanks for joining us today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
Earth + Sky Massage and Acupuncture is a wellness practice located in Long Island City, New York. As the owner, my mission is to foster a nurturing environment where skilled therapists can thrive in their respective specialties—massage and acupuncture—while maintaining the freedom to express their unique styles and techniques. I am equally passionate about supporting each person who walks through our door, ensuring they receive personalized care tailored to their needs. This is achieved by cultivating a team that is diverse in their strengths and specialties, allowing us to offer a holistic and ever-changing approach to healing that blends quality bodywork with individuality within each treatment. Although we have set service options, we do not set the exact treatment within those services, but instead allow the therapists to build and follow their instincts. Our office team is incredibly knowledgable about pairing the right therapist with the right client. Having started out as an office manager myself, I know the importance of the office team understanding the individuality of each therapists’ work. This builds therapist-client relationships that last decades. There is great trust and support throughout the entire team and I am honored to work with such incredible practitioners and people.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am the owner and one of the acupuncturists of Earth + Sky Massage and Acupuncture, located in Long Island City, New York—just a 5-minute subway ride from Grand Central! Before entering the world of acupuncture, I was a professional dancer in New York City, and for many years, acupuncture was my go-to therapy for staying healthy and injury-free. Having been treated with acupuncture since childhood, I’ve always been fascinated by it’s ability to facilitate healing in the treatment room, as well as its focus on healthy nourishment of all aspects of life.
There was a pivotal moment in my dance career when I realized I wanted to shift the focus of my life, both mentally and physically. This led me to explore new paths in the health and wellness field. With a deep passion for helping others and a love of learning, I decided to pursue acupuncture as my next chapter. Along the way, I’ve had the privilege of learning from incredible mentors in both acupuncture and business who have been instrumental in guiding me to where I am today.
I am deeply committed to growing my acupuncture practice at Earth + Sky and equally passionate about supporting each member of our team in developing their own individual practices. I thrive on learning through experience—observing, practicing, and continually evolving. It’s a journey I truly enjoy.
Earth + Sky is a medical massage and acupuncture clinic dedicated to providing personalized, high-quality care. Our team consists of skilled therapists with experience ranging from over 25 years to fresh graduates, each bringing their own expertise and approach. We offer a wide variety of services, including deep tissue massage, perinatal bodywork, craniosacral therapy, Mayan abdominal massage, manual lymphatic drainage, pediatric bodywork, and Jin Shin Jyutsu.
We also feature a small apothecary in our waiting room, offering products that complement our treatments. From Oma’s seaweed soup and Jean’s Greens herbal teas to Evil Bone Water liniment and Sisters of Valley CBD salve, each product is chosen with care, and at least one of our therapists has a personal connection to the product or its maker.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Word of mouth is, at its core, one of the most effective and authentic ways to build a loyal clientele. Whether it’s a current client of Earth + Sky recommending a massage therapist they loved for their prenatal session, or a colleague in a related field—such as a physical therapist, gynecologist, or lactation consultant—referring clients to us, the personal connection behind the referral makes all the difference. When the recommendation comes from someone you trust, it creates a natural, seamless bond that benefits everyone involved. This also means building strong relationships and networks within both our local community and the broader health and wellness field surrounding massage and acupuncture. A robust referral network not only helps us connect with trusted practitioners but also enables us to better support our clients. By having a wide range of resources to share, we can provide more comprehensive care, ultimately supporting our clients’ overall health and well-being.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
I come from a background in immersive dance theater, where every detail of the environment plays a crucial role in shaping the audience’s experience. This mindset and attention to detail are something I carry with me in everything I do, and they influence my approach to small business ownership in both obvious and subtle ways. I believe it’s this nuance that contributes significantly to client retention and the growth of our client base.
At Earth + Sky, the moment a client walks through the door, their “treatment” begins. From the ambiance of the space to the warmth of their greeting, every element contributes to the overall experience. What they encounter before entering the treatment room is just as important as the therapy itself. That’s why I’ve dedicated time and energy into crafting an environment that reflects our values. From the aesthetics and the plants, to the cleanliness, lighting, and the training of our office staff—so many small details, often unnoticed by the client, play a vital role in shaping their overall experience, which then contributes to their eagerness to return and refer friends and family.
