We recently connected with Kenix Xiaoqing Liang and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kenix Xiaoqing thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
It is an important mindset for me to work for a series or a project, and create a body of works that address the main idea of the project from different perspectives. I learned a lot from my last project, a series of paintings called “Deceiving Skin”, which discussed the idea of “boundary” diving space or organisms. I was constructing images that were much more sophisticated than my previous works. Another challenge was the limited time. The beauty of painting lies on the unknown, but when the task was substantial and the time was limited, it was hard for me to enjoy the struggle of the unknown. However, I was able to meet the deadline and was able to still enjoy a bit of painting (while you are fully indulged in painting, you don’t feel time but inner peace). I learned a lot from this experience in terms of painting technique and time management.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a visual artist. I mostly make paintings and ceramics. I also make a little bit of animation. When I first went to college, studied Economics, and then I realized that that wasn’t my interest. I wanted to learn something more creative and allowing self-expression. I later transferred and started to study in art, and ever since I have identified myself as an artist and determined to make a career as an artist.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
When my works are liked and appreciated by the audience. And when a work has done in the studio and I have got to the end of the creating curve, I would feel like I have conquered something.

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
” A Painter of Our Time ” by John Berger shows me how a true art enthusiast looks like as well as how we deals with balance of art and the complexity of life . It depicts the struggle of the protagonist, a communist exile from Hungary, to reconcile solitary call of art with the demand of conscience. Even though facing different situations from the protagonist, I find this book very inspiring for it addressing the universal struggle of being an artist and depicting the hope and excitement ones can feel when they are faced with art.
