We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kenisha Morgan. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kenisha below.
Kenisha, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
I think as a child, we can list 80 things our parents did not do right, but once we mature, we realize they did the best they could. If I had to say what my parents did right, they encouraged me to believe in myself when others doubted. This is done by nurturing my self-esteem.
One thing my father did to nurture my (our) self-esteem was by doing daily affirmations before school. Everyday we had to sit in the car and say, “I like myself,” “I am smart,” and “I am attractive” at least 10-20 times.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I got into the industry by doing a church play at my local church. I got the acting bug from that play. From there, I made it a mission to pursue acting. I love the acting art form. As actors or actresses, we have the ability to emote emotions on stage. We are praised for expressing these emotions on stage. For me, it is like therapy, I can express my true feelings on stage or in a film.
I am most proud about my decision to leave a job that I no longer loved. In 2017, I got accepted to The Atlantic Acting School’s Evening Conservatory Program in NYC. In 2018, I began the process to uproot my life and move to NYC. I sold my car, I gave up my apartment, and I ended my career as a Montessori Lead Teacher at a private preschool. I moved to NYC with $800 to attend the program. I had no real plan, but I knew I had to go to NYC to train. It was one of my best decisions because I learned a lot about the business of acting from the program. Since graduating from the program, I have been able to work with several NYC theatre companies. These opportunities are preparing me for bigger projects in NYC. I believe that I will book a Broadway show while living in Atlanta, GA. It will happen.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an actress is being able to emote emotions. In acting, you can explore all kinds of human emotions on stage or film. By doing so, people are in awe at how well an actor or an actress can connect to these realistic human emotions; however, in real life, people are not able to show these emotions. Many cases people are told to get over it or let it go, but they can rarely express their true emotions without being judged.. In a time when suicidal rates are growing, mass shootings are rising, & homicides are increasing, we need to allow people to express their deepest emotions and hug them. It is a privilege to be an actor & I hope more people find the art form.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
For me, I wouldn’t say resources, I would say the understanding of my creative journey. It is never too late to start a dream or too late to reach a dream. Sometimes, we get pressured by society to accomplish goals by our late 20s, early 30s, late 40s, and so forth. We shouldn’t do that to ourselves. Your journey is your journey. That is the only thing I wish I knew about earlier in my creative journey. I spent too much time comparing myself to others, by doing so, I blocked my blessings.
