We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kenisha Harris a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kenisha, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
Everything started with my need to find a job that really fit my lifestyle and goals. So, I began by journaling about what I wanted: the ideal schedule, the right pay, and the job qualities that would suit me best. Once I had that vision, I looked at the skills I already had, asking myself what type of work could meet those needs. That’s when I remembered how, as a young girl, I used to help family and family friends clean their homes. It dawned on me that I could turn this skill into a financial resource.
I started working as an independent contractor, cleaning Airbnbs and residential houses. After a few months of contracting, I decided it was time to establish my own business. Since I already had the supplies and photos of my work, I was ready to create Nene’s Neat Services.
Over the next year, I focused on defining how I wanted to run my business, structuring it, and building a website and forms. Once I had these foundations in place, I started advertising my services to family, friends, and neighbors, officially bringing Nene’s Neat Services to life.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m Kenisha Harris, founder of Nene’s Neat Services, a cleaning business based in Jacksonville whose mission is to enhance the cleanliness, comfort, and aesthetic appeal of underserved and professional communities. From an early age, I learned the importance of helping others, influenced by my mother’s dedication to family and community. After navigating personal hardships in 2021, I turned my lifelong skills in cleaning and organizing into a business that’s helped me rebuild my life.
Nene’s Neat Services offers high-quality standard and deep cleaning for residential and short-term rental properties. We tailor each service to meet unique client needs, from comprehensive deep cleans to targeted kitchen or bathroom services. Clients appreciate our meticulous attention to detail, such as baseboard and window cleaning, the convenience of our online estimate tool, and several ongoing specials and discounts including our senior citizen discount.
I’m especially proud of the quality and growth of Nene’s Neat Services, allowing us to create clean, comfortable environments that exceed expectations. I want my clients to know they can rely on us without judgment; I understand that life can make managing responsibilities tough, and we’re here to help. Starting from a place of struggle, I’m honored to positively impact others’ lives and look forward to expanding Nene’s Neat Services to reach and uplift even more people.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
One event that truly tested my resilience was when I lost my car, which was not only my main form of transportation but also where I kept my cleaning supplies. With no car and no supplies I suddenly faced the challenge of reaching clients without the essential tools of my business. However despite the disruption, by using my resources and support from family and friends, I found ways to keep going. I quickly alerted clients of any reschedules or updates, repurchased all my supplies and used ride services to reach clients. This experience strengthened my determination to keep Nene’s Neat Services running, no matter the setbacks. I learned that when you have people depending on you, you have to find a way to make things happen,

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Early in my business, I offered additional services like pet care and grocery shopping. However, as I began taking on more clients and also lost my personal transportation I realized I needed to adapt. I decided to shift my focus solely to cleaning services, which became more manageable without a vehicle. This pivot allowed me to maintain my business effectively, with plans to eventually reintroduce those additional services when I’m better equipped to offer them consistently. It was a valuable lesson in prioritizing and adapting to changing circumstances.
