We were lucky to catch up with Kenish Coleman recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kenish, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
The first time I knew I wanted to pursue a creative professionally was at the age of five years old. I was a kid who picked out my own clothes since I could remember, I preferred clothes over toys and if I did like toys it would be dolls. I remember being in head start and I would sneak my favorite pair of shorts to school, (it had beads and butterflies on them, that was the first sign then that I was a true fashionista at heart) my favorite teacher, Ms. Perry would let me have my fashion show way. Lol, and my mom would just show up shaking her head because she always knew I care about what I wear. Fashion has been a gift of mine given by God, it’s like I just knew I was destined to be in the fashion industry someway somehow.
Kenish, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Greetings to you, I’m Kenish Coleman I hope this message finds you well. It is a pleasure to have you read about little ole me! I’m a native of Mound Bayou, MS where I learned the importance of my roots and how to propel forward into my life’s destiny. I furthered my education at Mississippi State University where I received my Bachelor of Business Administration with a minor in Marketing. I’m the Owner and Founder of Bellair Boutique, an online clothing brand that believes in expressing individuality through fashion. The Bellair brand was founded in 2018 while I was pursuing my undergraduate degree, this was my door-opening opportunity to enter the fashion industry. I’m most proud of myself just for starting a dream and vision that God downloaded on the inside of me since I was in my mother’s womb. I didn’t start out perfect, but as I continued to learn things I added them on to my brand, and learning is still a daily surrender for me because I still don’t have it all figured out. My main goal is for Bellair to be a true inspiration to anyone who just wants to take that leap of faith in their dreams, no matter the industry.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
In my words, I say the meaning of resilience is the ability to overcome. A story that I would like to share is one of my most precious stories, I was in my junior year of high school and I decided that I wanted to enter the campaign of running for my high school’s queen. It was a dream of mine since the 6th grade, so I just knew I had to find ways to prepare. A year before the election I prayed to God and asked Him daily for this position. Surely asking came with learning how to be a servant and more. Fast forward to the campaign, I decided on election day that I wanted to leave the campaign due to negative thinking and hearing negative things from others. I allowed the chaos in my mind to get so loud that I was willing to walk away from the very thing I’d prepared for so long. I remember calling my mom and sharing with her my decision and how I felt at the moment, the only thing she said to me after my tantrum was, “If you were thrown to the wolves you would return leading the pack.” This very statement caused me to persevere and go after the very thing I wanted. I received the title, but the lesson in it was the biggest blessing. I carry this quote with me in any situation I face. This is the first story to ever build my resilience and how keep propelling forward.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being creative is seeing the outcome of a project. As a creative you never know how your work will turn out, you just have faith that it’s going to be the bomb. I really find enjoyment of being able to stare at my art that all began as an idea, it’s really cool.
