Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kendra Weathersby. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kendra, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I started my business last year when one of my old coworkers and friend from a previous job reached out to me about her banana pudding craving. She said she remembers when I made some and brought it to one of our company pot lucks and said how good it was and that she would even pay me to make it! When she told me she was willing to pay for my banana pudding I had the bright idea to see if anyone else would be interested and to my surprise many people were. I started researching if there were any businesses who strictly sold banana pudding and come to find out there were none in the Sacramento area so I decided to become the first! I knew that Banana Pudding Krazy would be a worthwhile endeavor when I sold out at the very first event that I had the pleasure of being a vendor at. I was so excited to create new and unique pudding flavors because I am honestly not the biggest fan of bananas so it was and still is really fun to create new flavor combinations. It has truly became a passion of mine and I am so excited for what the future holds for my business.
Kendra, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a mother of four so my hands and my schedule are always full so starting a business was not on my radar what so ever! I am just the type of person who believes in divine timing and that everything happens for a reason; so I took it as a sign from God when I found out that people were willing to pay for my banana pudding.I was laid off in 2019 and decided to stay home with my family because the cost of day care just did not make sense. It was a huge adjustment for me because I have been working since I was 14 years old; so when someone said they would pay for my banana pudding I was like okay I can be my own boss and have something for me again. I have seen people sell traditional banana pudding and I am honestly not the biggest fan of it so I figured I would put a “krazy” twist on a classic and create some unique flavor combinations. For example; Razz Pistach includes shortbread cookies, pistachio flavored pudding, chopped pistachios, raspberry compote and fresh raspberries. We offer many other flavors like Butterfinger, Twix, Blueberry Lemon Drop and I also try to come up with a new flavor for each event that I vend like Red Velvet Cheesecake and Peach Cobbler and Cream. My goal is to have a little something for everyone because not everyone like bananas and I want everyone to be able to experience the amazing textures and flavors that my business offers.I feel like all of my different flavor combinations is what sets Banana Pudding Krazy apart similar businesses and also the fact that the only product that I offer is pudding. I am most proud of staying consistent. In the past I have started many different ventures and I was never able too stay consistent and keep anything going until I started this business so that is something that I am extremely proud of. I would like all of my current and potential customers and supporters to know that I strive for greatness and that I pride myself on excellent customer service. From communication to satisfaction, I truly do my best to make sure you are all happy. My business has become a fun and creative outlet that I am extremely passionate about. I put my heart into Banana Pudding Krazy and the proof is in the pudding!
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Word of mouth has absolutely been the best source of new customers for me. I feel like good old word of mouth advertising has always been and will always be the best way to get your product out there and attract new customers. People are usually creatures of habit and are hesitant to try new things, but I have found that when people tell their friends and family about my pudding and how delicious it is they tend to trust them and their taste buds and more times than not they come try it for themselves. I am so grateful for my customers and I just love when they refer others to me. I am forever grateful.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I think there are a multitude of things that have helped me build my reputation within my market. One being social media. Social media is so important in today’s world. I post reels and pictures of my pudding and I also share reviews on my social media. This has helped people know and trust my business. Attending pop ups as a vendor has also helped build my reputation because I get to interact with people face to face and have longer more meaningful conversations and it is helpful because people get to catch my good vibes and see what Banana Pudding Krazy is all about. Pop Ups also provide a unique opportunity to network and build connections. The more pop ups you attend the more your business floods the market and helps build your reputation.
