We were lucky to catch up with Kendra Neidig recently and have shared our conversation below.

Kendra, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?

Starting this business was probably one of the biggest risks I have ever taken. Unfortunately in October of 2022, I was in a pretty bad car accident. It left me out of work for a couple of weeks and when I returned I wasn’t able to work like I did before. The 40 hour work week was just too much for my healing body.

Unfortunately, this did lead to me losing my job. At this point, a 9-5 just wasn’t an option for me. So I took the knowledge I gained from my previous job that I had lost, as well as my internships and college degree and started Buena Vista Dog Training.

Being a new business is very risky, but so far I have been so thankful for every opportunity given to me!

Kendra, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

I got my first internship in Maine working with dogs and positive reinforcement! From there, I went on to intern at Oceans of Fun with seals and seal lions, Dolphins Plus with dolphins, and Theater of the Sea with mammals.

After a few months, I was hired on at Theater of the Sea as a Parrot Trainer. From there, I moved to Orlando to pursue a job at Discovery Cove in their Bird Dept.

I later was hired at a dog training company Full Time and was with the company for 2.5 years. After leaving the company, I started Buena Vista Dog Training!

I offer In-Home, private, customizable training. I travel to you so you don’t even have to leave your home! My goal is to help you fix your dogs problems such as barking, pulling on the leash, not listening, and so much more.

Have a young puppy? I work on puppy training and obedience programs too. I focus heavily on behavior modification with a strong foundation of obedience.

I strive to be the best trainer for you, your family, and your dog! I set myself apart from many others by having a degree in Animal Behavior. Having a degree or certification is not required to train dogs. However l, I find it should be! My background in animal psychology plays a huge roll in how I train and work with your dog.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?

The absolute best sour e of new clients for me is word of mouth. Many people have dogs, and when we talk about our dogs or show how well behaved they can be. That information can go a long way.

In today’s day and age, our dogs are family and we want what is best for them. So when someone you trust tells you about a wonderful dog trainer, they tend to listen! I want to be that dog trainer for you and everyone you know.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?

Just after starting this business, I had shoulder surgery to repair a tear I recieved in my car accident in October 2022. As soon as I was healed enough, I began taking on clients. Through all of this, I have been struggling with severe back pain, again, from the accident. I have always pushed through and helped my clients as much as possible.

Even now in October 2023, I just had back surgery. My clients have been absolutely amazing and understanding. Having a brand new business and having 2 surgeries in the same year hasn’t been easy to say the least. I have persevered and plan to be better than ever in 2024!
