We recently connected with Kendra Morris and have shared our conversation below.
Kendra, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
As a kid I always found ways to express myself through making songs, performing or creating a world to sneak away to. I’ve always welcomed mistakes and not been afraid to share my mistakes or process with others.. it’s all part of my story and being present, not too much in past or anxiously thinking about the future has proven to be so important to harnessing my creativity. The only obstacles that have tried to stand in the way are getting a no or someone else’s negativity or doubt and letting it get to me. You gotta look straight ahead and keep pushing forward and focus! I like to say to myself.. there’s no such thing as no!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a singer/songwriter and musician on Karma Chief Records as well as do various forms of visual art including collage stop motion animation, direct music videos and other visual art mediums . I’ve been putting out records for the last ten years and touring full time this last year, made music videos for an array of acts like Czarface, Skinshape and animated parts of a documentary film about improv comedy guru Del Close.
I believe creativity is in all of us and it’s really what muscle you want to work out. When I’m stumped musically i take a break and do something with my eyes and my hands then when I go back to my song it seems to open up a new highway in finding the song. They seem to tap eachothers back.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I was starting to tour a lot and spending more time in Europe. I got pregnant and decided by the 8th month to take a break on the touring and focus on the early months of motherhood. People thought that just because I was having a baby meant I was done as a musician and artist but instead it just propelled me forward. I looked at time in a different way and thrived in finding my creative time in the pockets.. and then I pushed myself even further. Just because I couldn’t play shows all the time at first or had less time in some areas didn’t mean I couldn’t be an artist anymore! I found new ways to work and learn new things. When my daughter would nap I would pull out my camera and collaging materials or edit videos to use as projections for shows or online videos to create new dimension to my songs . I believe when I became a mother I got creative super powers and became an expert in time management!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
There are so many rewarding aspects about being an artist .. but one of the many is the surprise in the every day adventure of it. You never know where the word “yes” or “I’ll give this a try” .. will take you. Or when I make a song.. I’ll first hear it in my head and then to watch it shape into a full song, wind up on a record and watch it tap someone else in an emotional way down the road, that’s such an incredible feeling and thing to experience.
