Kendra, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later

If I were to go back in time, I do wish I had started my business sooner than I had. Pitch Black Entertainment LLC was started in 2020 and established in 2021. It was just the brink of the pandemic, my oldest kids were just about to graduate high school and I was making major lifestyle changes and other unexpected changes arose, and I knew I needed to do something as I was a full-time student and stay at home mother. Starting sooner would have had allot of benefits to being a black woman-owned business. I could only image what PBE would look like now, if I had. I’m sure there would have been some changes, but I believe, it was all in the timing that it was meant to be. I’ve learned allot by being a business owner. It’s had its unique experiences that I believe has made the journey even more special and dear to my heart.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

Kendra Montgomery, a mother of four young ladies and a multi-talented individual who excels in various fields. Kendra is a Spanish Interpreter, Entrepreneur, Podcaster & an ambitious Engineering student. With her diverse skill set and vibrant personality, Kendra brings a unique perspective to everything she does, including in the creative world of event planning. Kendra draws inspiration from her background of being in foster care as a child, raising three girls as a young single mother and strong identity in culture as a black woman who has overcome many struggles. The mission is to uplift and celebrate one another. Her children and community are what gives her strength to empower, encourage and support women of color, entrepreneurs and the underrepresented that no matter the challenges or obstacles we face, we will overcome them together.

As a party coordinator, Kendra approaches every client with a unique technique as each client has a different vision. She tackles each one with determination, ease & focused effort, knowing that it’s a strategic process. She collaborates with for-profit and nonprofit organization to reach the goal. Kendra also admins Black Women of King and Snohomish counties group on Facebook, organizing group events for the women, their families and spouses to make an impact within our community.

You can hire PBE for just the entertainment sector of your desired event, or just the decor but most hire to do the whole event as Kendra is proficient from start to finish, from budgeting, securing a venue and inventory to executing the entire vision into a masterpiece. Throughout the years, the insight, guidance, experiences and personal growth have helped me to find my purpose and stay grounded in my truth.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?

A lesson I’ve had to learn through being a business owner – Well, there are many but let’s stick to the basics. I’ve learned not to trust everyone’s word, ALWAYS, ALWAYS have a contract signed. It covers you and them! From business partners to outsourcing a specialized need for a client, to directly with the client. It will save you the headache of what was communicated as far as your role from covering what was expected of you and what you delivered and what was asked of you compared to what was the end result.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?

Best source of clients are the alive and walking ones. No, but seriously, anyone and everyone can benefit from having an event planner. From weddings, to Quinceanera’s, to business seminars, panels, brunches and so on… There is a plethora of ideas in order to celebrate one another! Networking, social media and word of mouth are how I gain my new clients.
