We were lucky to catch up with Kendra Marsh recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kendra , thanks for joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
A risk I took recently is, going to another state by myself to work for the day. I currently live in Baltimore City, Maryland. I drove to Washington, D.C for door dash work. I been to Southeast D.C plenty of times, but I never been on the Northeast side of D.C. It was a different experience for me. I ended up making more money, being away from Baltimore City. It was a risk I took by myself and I truly enjoyed it.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I’m 26 years old and I come from six generations of ministers and singers. My upbringing has always been centered around the church. I was enrolled in Fortis Institute pursuing to be a MOA (Medical Office Assistant. I also have attended Baltimore City Community College to be a RN (Registered Nurse). I am now a certified CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) as well as a certified GA (Geriatric Assistant). I have sat on the Youth Advisory Board, under Ready By 21 for Baltimore City. I’m currently serving as Co-Chair (Youth Workgroup) under the People’s Commission To Decriminalize Maryland. I’m a Justice Ambassador for the Prison Fellowship Nonprofit and I currently have a residential cleaning business that I started working for a year ago.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson I had to unlearn is, thinking people in the communities know what their community offer. I have witnessed plenty of situation’s where people talked about needing certain resources. I told them it was available in the Baltimore City area. I showed them where they could go online to get to the resources.
Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
If I could go back in time, yes I would choose the same profession of being in the nursing field. I have a passion for helping other’s, since childhood. The nursing field has always been a part of my family history.
