We recently connected with Kendra Clay and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kendra thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
I feel like being happy as a business owner is situational for me. Like in the present moment I feel like having consistent clientele and steady income would make me happy, but on the other end, being able to do what I love does make me happy. I ended up injuring myself at work last year which has slowed down my business this year and it has lead me to feel discouraged at times because it is like I have to start from scratch, but I truly believe that this is something God has called me to do and even though I may not be where I think I should be I am exactly where I need to be. Having a regular 9 to 5 would be ideal, but I know that I wouldn’t be fulfilled like I am running my own business.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Ken Care Cleaning LLC specializes in residential cleanings. We do commercial cleanings here and there, but our main focus are homes. Our business does deep cleanings, standard cleanings, or move in/out cleanings. These cleanings vary from cleaning your baseboards to cleaning your appliances to something as simple as dusting and vacuuming. It all depends on what the client wants. We can come weekly, bi-weekly, once a month or every quarter. Our goal is to accommodate and make it easier for the clients. Who wouldn’t want to be in a clean space? What I am most proud of as a company is not giving up. It’s a million people who have cleaning companies, but I think what keeps me going is knowing that the clients that are meant for me are going to be for me. You win some, you lose some, that’s just part of the business and life in general.
What sets Ken Care a part from others is that we don’t worry about the “OTHERS” we do what we need to do when it needs to be done. We’re our own competition and trying to be better than we were yesterday is always the goal.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Injuring my leg last year and thinking I wouldn’t be able to continue my business and in this current moment having to rebuild my clientele from scratch to me illustrates resilience. It is tough. Just a couple days ago I was on google looking for jobs because I was so discouraged and didn’t think I could go on with my business or even wanted to, but it’s like I felt God tell me to stop worrying and just trust Him. Sometimes starting over isn’t always a bad thing. In many situations we need a fresh start. Something that was created from a negative situation can be turned around into a positive one depending on how you look at it. I think I am finally choosing to take what I am given and make the best out of it.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
That everyone close to you has to support you or be a client. Support comes in many forms and I think starting my business I thought okay I’m going to be booming because I have this amount of family members and this amount of friends/associates, but that was definitely not the case. I had to find my target audience and just because I may not be cleaning for the people I personally know/have relationships with that doesn’t mean that they don’t support me or haven’t supported me in other ways in the past.
