We recently connected with Kendall Williams and have shared our conversation below.
Kendall, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s kick things off with a hypothetical question – if it were up to you, what would you change about the school or education system to better prepare students for a more fulfilling life and career?
If I could change one thing about the education system for students to be more prepared for a fulfilling life and career, I would recommend everyone take a gap year or do an internship before deciding on a major. When I was in college, I changed majors 5+ times resulting later in no degree because the bottom line was I had no idea what I actually wanted to do.
2 years into college I decided to put a pause on classes due to COVID and pivot to an internship in what I thought I wanted my career to be, marketing. Doing a marketing internship to this day, is the best thing I have ever done for my career. It not only shows you what you day to day would be like, you learn skills and if that is truly what you want to do with your career.
So many students go into college choosing a major they have no experience in, just interest. I believe students would be set up for more success if before college they did at least a summer internship to explore careers.
Kendall, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Born and raised in a small town in Northern CA, I now reside in Salt Lake City, UT. I got started in marketing during college where I did a marketing internship at a small marketing company in Roseville, CA. From there I decided to go into marketing at a real estate company and quickly realized I had a burning passion for entrepreneurship.
I now run my own marketing company where I serve small-medium businesses and work with other marketing agencies. I primarily specialize in social media, PR, and project management.
My clients come to me because they don’t have enough hours in the day to prioritize their business and need guidance. I like to call myself a “chaos tamer” as building project management systems and processes is where I thrive and where the basis of all good businesses start.
I encourage everyone to chase their dreams, no matter how scary. Taking the leap into entrepreneurship has been the scariest, but most rewarding journey. I am most proud of myself for believing in myself to dare and follow my dreams. I have since started a clothing business that is a creative outlet for me to showcase my art – The Vibrant CEO.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
That you will have more time when you are a business owner. I had to unlearn that the day I quit my 9-5! I thought I would be able to work a few hours a day and my business would thrive, and some days that is the case, but not at the beginning. It takes hours, days, and years to build your business and create the lifestyle you want.
I always tell people – you don’t start a business to work less, you start a business to have fewer people telling you what to do! If you can be patient, eventually you will work less!
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
My business has been bootstrapped since day one. I saved money every month and set aside a savings account for myself for when I quit my job. I worked for months on creating a website, setting up systems, looking into the best systems, and making smart financial decisions for my business.
You don’t have to have it all figured out, just start somewhere and go from there!
