We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kenan Thompson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kenan, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Originally I attended local events as a vendor selling gems and minerals. One of the things I enjoy most in life,is interacting with new people from all walks of life, being able to meet/network and often times inevitably develope lifelong friendships. Through attending these local events i was provided just the opportunity to do so. As time went on I began to dabble in the idea of hosting/coordinating my own events. In doing so it would allow me the beautiful interaction I live for, as well as the platform to reach out to others to assist in finding or helping with their own ideas. Many times in life people tend to get “lost” allowing them to drift into unhealthy or dangerous situations, and I frankly refuse to lose anymore good people from my life due to being lost and not believing you can get out of it. As humans we need human connection to thrive and continue to grow.
Kenan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My Name is Kenan Thompson aka The Event Guy owner of Event Monster. I began event coordinating after starting a monthly mental health meeting with the help of some amazing friends, from that “Mindful Minds” was born. Mindful Minds is a local mental health meeting, occuring every 3rd Sunday of each month. From these meetings a passion was discovered, a passion for building a community. In order to spread the simple idea that, “you are not alone”. This statement is how I end all of my meetings. I have lost to many friends and family from the feeling of being alone, and I refuse to lose any more. So from the Mindful Minds Meetings my team and I have began “Event Monster” an event coordinating business where we host local events all around the state. Our events range from mental health meetings, farmers markets, comedy shows, art classes, concerts and so many more community events. With the goal of bringing as many people together as possible to remind them we are all in this together and “you are NOT Alone”.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I have grown my following (community) organically through old fashioned face to face interaction, word of mouth and return clientele. These are keys to growing any business, relationship, community, etc. You must provide quality products/experience along with even better customer service and loyalty to your community. If done genuinely and consistently there is no end to the potential of your community growth.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
