We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kenan Amori. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kenan below.
Kenan, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
At 19 years old I took my first risk with writing and releasing music about my personal life in my songwriting. Since I was 13 years old I always had songs about my relationship with God, my complicated love life, my insecurities, and family issues. However, I never released the songs about my personal life because I was afraid of what my siblings, peers, and classmates would think of me. I wanted to keep up with the popular artist in my city and fit in with the rappers on the radio. Finally, I took a risk at 19 years old when I wrote, recorded, and released a song called Dear God. The song was about my rededication to God, my personal struggle with my mother, and my battle with my congenital heart defect. The song had mixed reactions from listeners, a local DJ denied my song to be debuted on his playlist and a close pastor of mind didn’t like some of the song lyrics. I didn’t let that experience stop me from making music because I was proud of myself for speaking the truth in my music and letting the world hear it.
Kenan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hey, my name is Kenan Amori. I am a Hip Hop artist from Washington, DC and I knew I wanted to make music since I was 7 years old. I got into the craft of rapping, performing, and songwriting by watching my favorite rappers and singers on the television everyday after I got home from school. Furthermore, I provide people with good quality music to help them get through their personal struggles in life and feel good about themselves. Also, I solve people’s problems by giving them inspiration and confidence to pursue their own goals in life. In addition, I am most proud of the people who come up to me after a performance and tell me how my music moved them in a positive direction. In conclusion, I want all my supporters to know I am human just like them. I cry, I smile, andv I laugh like everyone else in the world. So please don’t put me on a pedestal because I am you and you are me, together we are stronger.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I knew I had to pivot in my life when I graduated from Booker. T Washington Public Charter School in 2014. While I was attending Calvin Coolidge High School and Booker T. Washington PCS I was getting into all kinds of trouble. I sold marijuana, stole people cars, had fist fights with classmates, broken into people properties, participated in underage drinking, and smoking. As a result, I got arrested with 3 of my friends for riding around in a stolen car. The judge who oversee my case told me if I don’t change I wouldn’t graduated high school or live a meaningful life. Furthermore, he encouraged me to bring my grade point average up from a 1.2 to a 3.5. After the judge dismissed my case I continued to work on myself, Finally, I stopped drinking smoking, fighting, and committing crimes. Ever since I changed, my life has been better and I was able to inspire young people who listen to my music to be different and practice leadership skills.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a Hip Hop artist for me is listening to my voice after I recorded a song in a studio session. This is rewarding because I grew up as a timid child. I was afraid to speak to classmates in school and I had a hard time making friends. So when I listen to my voice on top of a beat is like a breath of fresh air because I’m stepping out of my comfort zone in a creative way.
