We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ken Nyberg. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ken below.
Alright, Ken thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I’ve always had an interest in art but making a living at it was a foreign concept to me, I started my journey at the now defunct Duluth Business University. They had a small graphic program that focused on design but most importantly digital design. That’s where I focused my efforts. From my first semester at DBU I started freelancing for friends and family. This helped me hone my skills and through word-of-mouth acquire new and exciting clientele. Learning the basic Adobe programs through school really opened the doors to making cool art and even getting paid to do it! The main obstacle for me was also making a living at my day job, finding time for freelance and learning new skills was hard to come by.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
I’m the owner and operator of Lost Forty Design, I focus primarily on logos, branding and package design. I work with clients all over the world to either help get their new brand established or fine tune an existing business to help it become more profitable and attract the right customer for them. Through social media I’ve generated clients that fit my design aesthetic and are looking for my particular design style.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I want every client’s brand to not only speak to who they are but also get them the customers they’re after, every design should be a unique creation based on the client’s personality and the history behind what they’re doing.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
To acquire new clients I focus on social media, primarily Instagram. I’m a firm believer that if you practice your skills and put your style out in the world you will attract the type of customer you desire. Being from Minnesota I work with a lot of outdoor/fishing brands and that’s not by coincidence either. I found a niche in the market that was looking for an authentic voice with a vintage feeling. I then focused my efforts in creating just that, word of mouth spread and I have more work than I can handle (in a good way).
