Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ken Henry . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Ken, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s kick things off with a hypothetical question – if it were up to you, what would you change about the school or education system to better prepare students for a more fulfilling life and career?
I feel the educational system should place more emphasis on financial literacy. A lot of the information we are taught during k-12 is interesting and you can use from time to time but it doesn’t prepare you for the real world. Financial literacy is one of the single most important tools you can have but you don’t really learn about it unless you take the initiative yourself or find yourself in a situation where you have no choice. I believe every individual has a calling and the ability to fulfill that calling. Being able to manage/understand debt and knowing the difference between assets and liabilities are valuable abilities that tremendously increase your chances of being able to execute whatever your calling may be.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am Ken Henry from Union Springs, AL and a Graduate of Tuskegee University. I currently work in corporate as an electrical quality engineer while also operating multiple business in the Atlanta area.
My main business is Protools Entertainment LLC which is a full service Dj and lighting business. We mainly service weddings and corporate events but also provide entertainment from private functions as well. I’m a lover of music and I’ve always been interested in how the great dj’s did what they do (seamless mixing, scratching, crowd control, etc). I saw an opportunity in the form of an ad while surfing the web 1 day to learn how to dj with this company called scratch academy, went to an open house they had, and the rest is history.
My job is to ensure all people I encounter while Dj’ing has a great time. No matter what type of day, week, month you’ve had prior to arriving at the event I’m spinning, my job is to make sure that while you’re with me, the only vibe/mindset you have is a positive one. I haven’t done my job if you didn’t leave craving more.
My main priority is customer satisfaction. Most of my events come from referrals and that is indicative of the quality of work I provide each and every event. I’m a firm believer in the old saying, “you get out what you put in”, and I put the work in the be the best on a daily basis. I tell potential clients all the time, do your event a favor and go with Protools Entertainment.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
My company was doing better than it ever had then the pandemic came knocking. I made 100% of my profits from showing up to events and playing music. Of course, all events are now getting cancelled or postponed which means i’m no longer making profit.
I had to completely switch my marketing strategy to now being a virtual DJ. I like to be proactive and began to invest in the proper equipment to give the best virtual experience as soon as I figured the pandemic was here for the long haul. Profits weren’t the same of course but I created a plan and executed on the fly to help alleviate some of the profit loss that was in store. That situation also allowed me to realize how important it is to always have a plan B in case the unimaginable was to occur.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson i’ve always been taught is that if you work extra hard and a lot then you’ll be successful/happy. I understand if that may have been the case at a certain time, but in today’s climate that couldn’t be further from the truth. I believe in finding ways to make your money work for you opposed to physically using up the majority of your time to generate funds. Assets are your best friend.
