We were lucky to catch up with Kemmii recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kemmii, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I grew up around music in my home church. My father is a pastor, therefore inactivity in the church was very uncommon. I learned to sing in church, how to harmonize, how to switch keys and stay on pitch and more. Therefore musical inclination and rhythm were instilled in me while being raised. I also grew up performing in dance recitals and other singing competitions, which prepared me to showcase my own work with professionalism. However, I entered a whole new ball park of tech when I decided to take music production and artistry seriously. I had to do research on the tools that will help expand my knowledge and create quality work. I studied various Youtube videos on how to work Logic Pro X, how to mix and master my own tracks, and how to arrange songs. I continuously worked on my craft and how to better my sound. Although I’ve come a long way, I’m still not finished learning. Creating is a learning process in itself, I learn more about what I can produce everyday.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Kemmii, I am a performing artist. Currently, I produce, write, and record my own work. I’ve created multiple bodies of musical projects that are available on all streaming platforms including an EP titled “HEELS” and an album titled “Love Cycles (Deluxe). I began my artistic career in 2021 during my sophomore year of high school. During that period of time I was creating beats on GarageBand and recording demos that I grew fond of. I gained the courage to release my work with support from my colleagues and family. As time progresses I hope to inspire people with my music. I want to create music that touches people and provides sanctuary for them. I believe music is a great tool for healing, and therefore I want to utilize my abilities to heal others. In return, I heal myself with my own music. Writing songs gives me room to express my feelings in creative ways, which is a form of therapy for me. My upcoming single “gold digger” will be released on November 24th! The track is a sultry, slow-burning ode to 90’s RnB, while paying homage to my influences like Jill Scott, D’Angelo, Musiq Soulchild and more. The lyrics illustrate a growing love that seems too good to be true. They express how introductory love-bombing is recieved as gold digging, as he constantly second guesses his partner’s actions.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I think society should allow creatives room to experiment and diversify their sound. Creating works of art mostly involves a lot of spontaneity and building off ideas. Therefore, it’s impossible to stick to one form or route of creation. It would be inauthentic to stick to one formula of creation because it is replication. Moreover, versatility is a very important skill to maintain as a performing artist. Allowing room for change and abstract work to grow would be greatly appreciated by many artists today.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect for me right now is seeing people connect to the lyrics of my song. As of recently, my lyrics have been closely written about my life and experiences. When my emotions resonate with another individuals’s story, it’s incredibly fulfilling.
