Today we’d like to introduce you to Kemerlin Richards
Hi Kemerlin, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My story has been unfolding for some time. I feel like it’s still unfolding in many ways. No different that our common human experience. But the story where I began on this path of leadership coaching I believe began after losing my corporate job. I was the resolution specialist/liaison over a multi-million dollar account. I wrote organizational policies, resolved issues on all levels, trained teams and offered organizational functionality processes to drive productivity. And after years of service in this position, I was fired. With no true valid reason given except for the organization jargon… but I knew what was happening.
I knew because I hadn’t been compliant, and raised too many questions about things that just didn’t work, were wasteful, and unethical I was being retaliated against. Thankfully, because they were unethical and I kept record, I was able to collect unemployment. So I took this time and did nothing .. I was tired, emotionally. With time and deep reflection, I realized as I share on my Podcast SHE Leads Authentically—Letting Go of External Validation in the Pursuit of Success, there were things I could’ve done better. Not to keep the job but to accept the lesson and elevation that was being presented to me.
For me that better was found my Personal Development—Self Mastery— the stuff beyond just the skills for a career role. With that said, readers, I did not get that understanding right away. And often we don’t get it, not due to anything intellectual. But we have these blockages due to unresolved trauma. And that is where I was…. so I started a business that did ok, but not great. And why was this? It was because I was dealing with a lack of confidence and enthusiasm for leadership .. I had the title, the website, the education, but I was backing away from leading. And ultimately that cost me.. My business did not flourish the way I wanted to.
I’m sure there were other knowledge-based gaps to deal with but none greater than my personal development. So I let the business go to focus elsewhere… No not personal development that I needed yet. I started influencing, and I did not do badly. I was showing up online, had an audience, brand deals, yet I was still restless like; “this isn’t it!” Remember, I told you all that I was backing away from leading.
You would think as an influencer being visible and in the “spotlight”, so to speak, meant I wasn’t hiding. Well, that couldn’t be further from the truth. I still was hiding. The thing about each of us is, we can all be leaders, but none of us should be leaders the same way. I was leading in a way as an influencer, but not the way I was purposed to do.
So I did what I now tell my clients to do. I leaned into supported success, I got myself a coach. That whole process started me on a journey to deal with me and to fill-in that gap. To remember my story and the contributions I made to my success.. also getting the clarity on what that story was telling me about my next move, where was I most effective, and most importantly why I was running from leadership. As I worked on my personal development— self mastery— I was able to uncover so much of my undocumented successes and realize that all I was craving was the cultivation to be the leader I knew I could be. The leader that would peak through here and there.. Coaching to me was that personal zero in cultivation I needed. And if as a leader with skills, experience and success I felt this way, then how many other women leaders feel the same?
A KPMG study revealed that 56% of women leaders cite a lack of mentors or sponsors as a key barrier to their advancement. The same study revealed 67% of women report they need more support building confidence to feel like they can be leaders. I was fired up … Fired up to understand these gaps. Why is this so? Even though these women leaders have the titles and are on the track of leadership, they are finding a deficit of adequate mentorship and the confidence they need to embody the leaders they want to be. What doesn’t sound like? There is a cry for true cultivation.
So I built a framework as I was grieving and rebuilding for myself to be the leader I was called to be. I was well on my way. I was doing the heavy lifting … getting all the scattered waste out of the way by taking myself through my own leadership framework that I now use to help many women leaders thrive beyond skillsets, cultivate resilience, and build authentic leadership.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely not! I think it’s harder for intellectuals and high achievers (Leaders).. We can get in our own way.. simply by knowing too much. And I will say that was a large part of the obstacle for me which led to overthinking, and as I call it undocumented success- the lack of clarity around my genius. The inability to explain in explicit detail how I got results. These results were beyond what I did. Why? Because as women we know how to do. But I was disconnected from my they way I uniquely made waves.. got results. It’s like I did it but when it came time to verbalize it, you would think I have accomplished nothing. But that was far from the truth. I just needed to remember my story.
So as I began to dump all the knowledge and make my success simple. I was able to get to the real work which was growing my human capital by investing in my personal development.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Honestly right now it’s my Bible… and it’s my Podcast- SHE Leads Authentically. Which reminds me of some advice I received and never forgot… there are times you have to shut out everyone else’s voice to be confident in your own. And that is what I’m doing. Not that I don’t read other books.. You should see my Library, by the way, I still buy books and annotate in the corners.. I felt that was critical information. Either way.. yes, it’s just Jesus and what He has given to me And no other voices that always seem to say; “maybe you should do it this way.” When I do that …. great things happen.
