We recently connected with Kely Pinheiro and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kely , thanks for joining us today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
Earning a full-time living from music is a challenging journey filled with highs and lows. For over a decade, I’ve pursued this path, encountering numerous obstacles along the way. Despite the difficulties, the support of kind-hearted people has been instrumental in my progress.
Last year, while on a rigorous tour as a musician, I confronted the harsh realities of the economic landscape for artists in cities like NYC. The struggle to make ends meet amidst skyrocketing living costs was disheartening. However, amidst the adversity, I found comfort in the camaraderie within the music community. Musicians supporting each other reaffirmed my belief in the resilience of the arts.
Returning from tour, immersed once again in the live music scene, I rediscovered my purpose. Despite the challenges posed by politics and economics, I remain optimistic about the future of the arts. In times of hardship, the necessity for creativity and expression becomes even more apparent, ensuring the enduring survival and eventual thriving of the arts.
Kely , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I began my musical journey as a child in Rio de Janeiro, exploring various instruments until discovering my passion for the cello at 12 years old. Supported by mentors and a love for music, I cultivated my skills and made invaluable connections in the industry. These connections led me to Berklee College of Music on a full scholarship, where I further sharpened my craft and met exceptional musicians. Touring with the Hadestown Broadway show expanded my horizons, and I recently earned another full scholarship for a graduate program at NJCU.
As a professional cellist and arranger, I specialize in delivering captivating performances and creating unique musical arrangements. My string quartet, Nebulous Quartet, blends jazz, Brazilian, and R&B influences, providing audiences with unforgettable musical experiences. Currently, I’m working on my debut album, which will showcase my artistic essence to the world.
What sets me apart is my diverse background, dedication to musical excellence, and commitment to pushing boundaries in the industry. I take pride in blending genres seamlessly and creating immersive musical experiences that resonate with audiences worldwide. I am most proud of my journey and the opportunity to share my passion for music with the world.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Absolutely! My creative journey is fueled by a profound mission—to serve as a conduit for authentic music that transcends boundaries and fosters positive change within myself and the world. I firmly believe in the power of music to unite, inspire, and uplift people from all walks of life. By embracing diverse experiences and perspectives, I aim to infuse my music with elements that resonate with audiences worldwide. Moreover, I strive to humbly honor the stories and emotions of others, recognizing the inherent value in every individual’s narrative. Through my music, I aspire to create a space of connection and understanding, where listeners can find relief, joy, and inspiration. Ultimately, my goal is to harness the transformative potential of music to cultivate empathy, compassion, and unity on a global scale.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Certainly! I had to unlearn the idea that I could give up on what I was truly meant to do. Throughout my journey, I faced numerous challenges such as financial struggles, toxic relationships, and uninspiring mentors, all of which tempted me to abandon my dreams. However, I came to realize that we all have a calling, a purpose that cannot be ignored without sacrificing our fulfillment in life. Despite moments of discouragement, I understood that it wasn’t my passion for my craft or music that caused these struggles, but rather societal inequities and unfair circumstances.
I firmly believe that it’s our responsibility to utilize our innate gifts and talents to challenge these injustices. By leveraging our unique abilities, we can pave the way for future generations of artists to navigate smoother paths and make a more profound impact on the world around them. It’s about acknowledging our potential to induce positive change and embracing the journey, no matter how arduous it may seem at times!
