We recently connected with Kelvin “Kay B” Brown and have shared our conversation below.
Kelvin “Kay B”, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
After the death of my bestfriend in late 2015 I decided that I wanted to pursue a career in music to honor of my bestfriend and continue his legacy. It started out as me paying respect to him but later I discovered this is a way I can change lives and speak for people who feel that they don’t have a voice in this society. I wanted to stand up against social injustice and be a pivot point for those who wanted change but just didn’t know how to go about doing so. After my 1st video release which have gained over a total of 300k views I figured out that this is my purpose. I strive to be a man of honor and I know that the legacy I’m leaving behind is something I know my son will benefit from to show him that even when it seems there’s no way there’s always way you just have to think outside the box
Kelvin “Kay B”, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I was born and raised in a single parent household in Chattanooga. I’m the youngest of 3 with 2 older sisters. I started in music at the age of 7 but didn’t take pursue music professionally until I was 26. I released my 1st project in 2016 entitled “Story 2 Tell” which gave me a big local buzz and a core following to last for years. I promote positivity and change and give people a different perspective on everyday life and how to better ourselves as human beings. I’m proud that tha some people look at me as their hero and someone they can look up to and say” hey he came from extreme circumstances but didn’t use that as an excuse to why he can’t prosper in life . As Kay B Brown I’m more than just artist I’m a influencer, I’m a brand, and im a crutch for for many people
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Giving people hope that they can overcome anything just as long as you don’t give up. Knowing that I’m leaving a impact on the world by just doing something I love. Having people recite my songs word for word and it’s not the typical rap that you hear everything it’s positive message that they’re reciting. I turned a negative into a positive and I didn’t without sacrificing my morals and principles.
How did you build your audience on social media?
When I was coming up trying to get people to talk about music I started with having my family share my music online. I have a very large and I used that to my advantage. I knew the power of social media and I knew once I had my music packaged correctly that I could get people to talk if they heard it . I had all my cousins and friends share the link to my music and before I knew I was shooting my 1st video. I knew exactly who I was talking and the message I was trying to get across so that formula I used worked in my favor . Once I had people attention it was pretty much history from there . I would tell anyone who’s trying to build a following is to study your target audience and execute whatever plan you have.
