We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kelvin Davis. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kelvin below.
Hi Kelvin, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Taking a risk is often betting on yourself and skills. No one knows you better than YOU, so it’s important to trust yourself and to invest in yourself. I know for me personally, I wasn’t going to be taken seriously in the fashion industry unless I created a name for myself. I started a body positive menswear blog called Notoriously Dapper, this blog was meant to give everyday men solid and reasonable style tips while also giving them giving them real life advice. I took the risk by creating the blog, producing my won content, writing my own blog posts and posting them.
I was able to build a name for myself. Because of this I have become an award nominated author, model and influencer. I truly encourage everyone no matter what field they are in to simply bet on themselves in anyway possible. I took the ultimate risk by quitting my day job as a middle school art teacher to pursue this full time as a career. I left teaching in 2018 and I have been doing this as a full time career ever since, Yes, it was scary but anything that requires a major change is goin to be scary. You have to take the risks and you have to get it done. If you don’t do it then who will because one this is for sure…..no one is going to do it for you.
Kelvin, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
An award nominated author, model & social media influencer.
Kelvin Davis is the founder and creator of Notoriously Dapper, a body positive menswear blog showcasing outfits to inspire men of all sizes to find confidence in their appearance. Notoriously Dapper was created to inspire all men to embrace who they are. This idea came to fruition after a shopping trip that unfortunately left a bad taste in his mouth. Ever since then he has vowed to never feel that insecure or ashamed of his body or size again. He started posting outfit looks to inspire and show men of size that you can be stylish regardless of our sometimes limitations when shopping or viewing clothing advertisements.
Blogging with this purpose has led me to becoming a signed Model & Influencer to Bridge Models; an agency dedicated to bringing body diversity to the fashion and entertainment industry. Kelvin has been featured in major media outlets such as The New York Times, The Daily Mail and The New York Post for his contributions to male body positivity. Kelvin has also modeled for the likes of Chubbies, Target, GAP, Lululemon and more.
Always donning his signature wide brim fedoras along with his infectious smile. On his Instagram he shares images that empower us all to love ourselves while continuing to spread the message of being your best self.
Kelvin has and continues to break modeling standards by pushing the fashion industry to be more inclusive of all body types, genders and races. He lives this message in his daily life, inspiring everyone worldwide to simply love themselves by finding and embracing their beauty within.
As a leading light in the body confidence movement for men, his persona offers empowerment and wisdom that contributes to building positive self-esteem. Now, as an author, he is spreading that positivity through his NAACP Image Award nominated book Notoriously Dapper: How to be a Modern Gentleman with Manners, Style, and Body Confidence.
Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
I think they are very cool. It’s like crypto but make it art, I’m always up to see different and influential art done in a creative way. I hope they continue to grow and change the art world is functioning.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part is that no one can take it away from you. You can use your artistry to creativeness to pave your own path. When you are good at it, it’s undeniable….if you aren’t good at it, Keep working until you are.
