We were lucky to catch up with Kelsie Coleman recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kelsie , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
I am a self-published author whose mission is simply to use the gift God has given me to uplift others, express myself, lift my voice in hopes that others don’t feel alone, and do it all in love. As I child, I was quieter, observant, and less likely to speak up first to share my thoughts on things unless we were close. So, writing became my safe place where I could say anything without judgment. When I turned 24 years old, I was challenged to trust God, trust my gift, and share it with the world. It is my aim that if I share with others that it is okay to be nervous and do it anyway it encourages them not to let fear or uncertainty keep them stagnate.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Kelsie Coleman, a Danville, IL Native is an Educator, Author, Mentor, family person, former collegiate athlete, and coach. She fell in love with writing in 3rd grade after the English lessons about journaling and poetry. Kelsie also realized she had a gift for writing throughout her life when many teachers, friends, and family members affirmed her ability to convey words well. While in college, she didn’t do much writing. However, once at home upon graduation, she picked up her pen again. After writing the first poem in a while, Kelsie sent a screenshot to her Godmother’s phone asking her to read it to make sure it made sense. Her Godmother called her to come over and made her read this poem multiple times. Later she would give her a phone number to self-publish a book. Kelsie is the Author of 3 Poetry books and 1 Self-Help book that can be found on her website and Amazon in paperback and Kindle form. Kelsie believes what sets her apart from other writers is how she writes her poems and what space she comes from when creating books. In life, a lot of people ask for her advice, and she naturally teaches people what she’s learned in hopes of helping them. So, she doesn’t write just for personal gain or money but, to help herself heal/process things then she extends encouragement to others by creating a book. What Kelsie is most proud of is achieving the goals she sets for herself, having the courage to put her work out there, and touching the people she has over the years. When you look at her books, Kelsie wants to inspire you to chase your dreams, trust God, and never let fear stop you from stepping outside your comfort zone. If she can do it, so can you!

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
In my life’s journey, I have had to unlearn allowing fear and my comfort zone to stop me. There were so many opportunities I passed up in my youth because it was going to put me in the spotlight or make me uncomfortable. I was quieter when I was younger unless we knew each other. Overthinking has also been a thing that I usually do to make sure I didn’t make the wrong decisions. However, I learned that sometimes trying to make the wrong decision can keep you from making any decisions at all. Now, I see I should’ve tried out for things learned to be scared and do it anyway because every time I tried something new even if I was a little nervous, it turned out better than I expected, including publishing my first book.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being creative is coming up with something beautiful to share with others. Once those pieces of poetry or stories shared in any book are shared with others it opens conversations with those who have read your work. My hometown has been my biggest supporter so far and some of those people are individuals I have known my entire life. So, when they text, call, or see me in person bringing up what they have gotten from my work or how it has helped them, it encourages me to keep writing. It also shows me that what I’m doing is not done in vain. The impact your gift can have on others is humbling, inspiring, and it affirms that you are created to do what you are doing.
