We recently connected with Kelsey Simmen and have shared our conversation below.
Kelsey, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I wasn’t a great student in high school. I learned this year that I have ADHD. It’s not extreme but probably enough to have had a hard time. After high school, I went to a junior college and then ended up enrolling in a massage therapy program. The instructor had us go around the room and share why we were there. I listened to so many people say this had been their dream and they were so happy to be there. When it was my turn I was honest, I thought I could make some money. When I got home that night I really thought about what I wanted to do. I wanted to be an artist. I did an accelerated massage therapy program and move to SF to go to art school within a few months. Art has always been a passion for me. I want to be good at it. I always feel good when I create.
Kelsey, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a jewelry artist who fabricates my work by hand in Northern California. After earning my degree I worked under several notable women in the jewelry field, accumulating a diverse toolbox to start my own jewelry studio.
My work features sugar as a main theme. I create textures in my pieces by growing, manipulating, and building with its crystals, from tiny sanding sugar to large rock candy. My intention is to create beautiful pieces that are distinct and thoughtful. The ultimate inspiration behind using sugar is my experience with type 1 diabetes, which has been a part of my life for over 25 years. While living with diabetes can be challenging, it brings me joy to share my experiences with people and create connections through my jewelry.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
It is so very rewarding to see someone wearing a piece you made. I can’t wait to see a KSJ in the wild! To have the honor of making a custom engagement/wedding ring for people brings so much joy. Jewelry can really bring connection. It’s a treasure to be a small part of people’s lives.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Not doing everything by yourself is huge. As an artist/small business owner, you have to wear many hats. Some of them just don’t fit. I hate doing accounting. It would take me forever and I would dread it every year. I finally set up a budget to pay to have an accountant and it’s a huge weight off my shoulders. You don’t have to do everything yourself. It’s okay to have help. Also, grants are huge. Apply for things!
