We recently connected with Kelsey Nevell and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kelsey thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Going back to the beginning – how did you come up with the idea in the first place?
After working together for a number of wedding companies that focused on booking a high volume weddings, my co-founders and I wanted to create something a little more personal. We are all drawn to authentic, candid moments and true to life (but better than you remember it) editing.
We wanted to create an end product that feels true to the couple and not an overly posed magazine couple while giving each client a more personal experience. We have a very small team and only book one wedding per day. So when a couple books with us, they are getting our full attention and know exactly who they will be working with in the shooting and editing process.
All 3 of us co-founders live in California so we have always been inspired by earth tones and the variety of nature settings that the state provides. The name Tangerine Weddings literally came to me while falling asleep one night–it just felt perfect. Just like the idea of creating this company. We love weddings, working with fun, down to earth couples, and doing it in a way that feels right to us. Through our many years of combined experience, variety of skills, and passion for the job, it really does feel meant to be.

Kelsey, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Photography has always come naturally to me. I was always the friend who brought around a tiny point and shoot camera to beach and eventually a DSLR camera to friend hang outs just to document everything. During my time at UC Davis, friends started to ask me to do graduation photos for them. I’ve had plenty of years of casual portrait experience but never paid until that point. I took a dive in and loved it! In the following years as my friends started to get engaged, I got more couples portrait experience then got into associate shooting for weddings. I gained so much experience working for others and got a feel for my style and workflow–candid, easy going, true to life but better than you remember it.
I worked with my friends Leo and Sean previously and together, we had something really great. After working for other wedding companies, we wanted to create something for ourselves that would really enhance the wedding experience for couples. With hundreds of weddings shot and edited between us, a personable approach to working with couples, and a love of weddings even after all these years, creating Tangerine Weddings just felt right.
We are easy going group of wedding professionals that strives to create a personal, stress free experience for couples getting married while creating photos and videos that stand the test of time and perfectly represents each couples’ unique story. Ultimately, we just want couples to have fun on their wedding day and be the team to support and cheer them on along the way!

We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
I met one of our Co-Founders, Sean in college! We were actually neighbors and we lived across the lawn from each other at UC Davis. We bonded over our mutual love of photography and camera gear and stayed in touch after college. I later worked with Sean and our other Co-Founder Leo at a wedding company where we all meshed together as friends but also as co-workers. Sean and Leo have also known each other for years through working for various companies. We have all learned so much from each other so it really feels like the perfect fit!

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
We love leaning into community and referrals from people who know and love our work! This last year we have attended several wedding fairs where we meet potential clients in person and get to answer their questions and know their story face-to-face. That has been such a special way to connect with couples and we plan to attend more of these fairs in the future.
We also get referrals from friends, former clients, and also vendors we love working with! It’s so nice when potential clients already have a sense of who we are. It’s that extra excitement when we get an inquiry from someone familiar that makes the process all the better!
