We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kelsey MacMinn. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kelsey below.
Kelsey, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Starting my photography business was one of the biggest risks I’ve ever taken—because on paper, I had no business doing it.
I wasn’t formally trained. I didn’t go to school for photography. I didn’t have a mentor or a roadmap. What I did have was a camera, a deep love for storytelling, and people around me who kept saying, “You have something here—you should do this.”
At first, I brushed it off. It felt too uncertain, too unstructured, too risky to turn something creative into something real. But the more I leaned into it—taking photos for friends, capturing moments that felt honest and emotional—I started to realize this wasn’t just a hobby. It was something I couldn’t ignore.
So I took the leap.
I built everything from the ground up—learning as I went, making mistakes, figuring out my style, and slowly finding my voice as a photographer. There were moments of doubt, seasons where I questioned if I was good enough or if I had started something I couldn’t sustain. But I kept showing up anyway.
Eight years later, that risk has turned into a business that has grown every single year. I’ve had the honor of serving over 500 clients—families, couples, mothers, and individuals who trusted me to capture some of the most meaningful moments of their lives.
Looking back, the risk wasn’t just starting the business. It was choosing to believe in myself before I had proof.
And that decision changed everything.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Kelsey, the photographer behind Kelsey MacMinn Photography, and at the heart of everything I do is a deep love for people and the stories they carry.
I didn’t come into this industry through a traditional path. I’m completely self-taught, and what started as simply picking up a camera and capturing moments for the people around me slowly turned into something much bigger. The more I photographed, the more I realized I wasn’t just taking pictures—I was preserving connection, emotion, and fleeting moments that people never want to forget.
That realization is what shaped my business.
Today, I offer a range of photography services including maternity, lifestyle newborn sessions, families, couples and engagements, weddings, branding and headshots, private events, and seasonal sessions. No matter the session type, my approach is always the same: I want it to feel natural, comfortable, and real. I’m not here to create stiff, overly posed images—I’m here to document the way your life actually feels in that season.
A lot of my clients come to me saying the same thing—they’re worried about feeling awkward in front of the camera, or they want photos that don’t feel forced or overly curated. That’s the problem I love solving. I create an experience where people can relax, be themselves, and trust that I’ll guide them in a way that still feels authentic. The result is imagery that feels intimate, emotional, and timeless—but also fun and full of personality.
What sets me apart is that I don’t treat photography as just a service—it’s an experience. From the way I communicate, to how I prepare my clients, to how I show up on session day, I’m intentional about making people feel seen, comfortable, and confident. I blend a classic, clean aesthetic with a relaxed, lifestyle approach so my work feels elevated but still approachable—something that resonates with real families and real life.
Over the past eight years, I’ve had the honor of working with over 500 clients, and I’m incredibly proud that my business has continued to grow year after year. But more than that, I’m proud of the trust people place in me. Being invited into someone’s most meaningful moments—welcoming a baby, celebrating a marriage, documenting a family as it grows—that’s not something I take lightly.
If there’s one thing I want people to know about me and my brand, it’s this: you don’t have to be perfect to be photographed beautifully. You don’t have to know what to do, how to pose, or how to “perform” for the camera. You just have to show up as you are.
I’ll take care of the rest.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My mission is to make photography feel natural, approachable, and genuinely enjoyable—something people don’t feel intimidated by or priced out of.
For a long time, professional photography has felt like something reserved for big milestones or special occasions, and even then, it can come with pressure to look or act a certain way. I want to change that. I want people to feel like they can show up exactly as they are—no stress, no overthinking—and still walk away with images that feel beautiful and meaningful.
I’m also really intentional about keeping my work accessible. I believe everyone deserves to have their story documented, not just a select few. You shouldn’t have to choose between quality and affordability, or between feeling comfortable and getting something that looks elevated and timeless.
At the end of the day, my goal is simple: I want photography to feel like an experience people look forward to—not something they dread—and to create images that feel real, effortless, and lasting.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I think my reputation has been built on a combination of consistency, connection, and trust.
From the very beginning, I focused on creating a really positive, comfortable experience for my clients—not just delivering beautiful images, but making the entire process feel easy and enjoyable. When people feel taken care of, they remember that, and they tell others.
Word of mouth has been huge for my business. So many of my clients come from referrals or are repeat families who come back to me year after year. That kind of loyalty doesn’t happen by accident—it comes from showing up consistently, communicating well, and genuinely caring about the people I’m working with.
I’ve also been very intentional about staying true to my style and my values instead of chasing trends. My work is meant to feel timeless, natural, and emotionally driven, and I think that consistency has helped people know exactly what they’re getting when they book with me.
And honestly, I treat every session like it matters—because it does. Whether it’s a big wedding or a simple family session, those moments are important to the people in front of my camera. I think that level of care and attention is something people feel, and it’s a big part of why they trust me and continue to come back.
