Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kelsey Ferrell. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kelsey , appreciate you joining us today. Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
At 23, fresh out of college, I felt a mix of excitement and uncertainty. While taking my final art classes, I had a breakthrough: what if I created custom rugs for my community? This idea ignited a passion within me. I envisioned rugs that would be more than decor; I wanted to craft an experience.
Determined to bring my vision to life, I dedicated my first year after college to mastering rug-making techniques and exploring various materials. It was a journey of discovery, filled with late nights and creative experimentation.
In my second year of tufting, I decided to share my skills with my community. To my surprise, the response was overwhelming. People were fascinated with my passion, offering support and encouragement as I offered more workshops month to month I have been able to share this creative adventure. It became a beautiful collaboration, turning my dream into a shared experience that celebrated a small business owner.
Kelsey , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Kelsey Ferrell, a self-made entrepreneur. At 23 years old, I graduated from Indiana University, where I honed my skills and developed a passion for business and design. My journey began with a desire to create something meaningful, leading me to become a (Tufting Artist) custom rug maker.
What sets me apart is my hands-on approach and commitment to understanding each client’s unique needs. I prioritize building strong relationships, ensuring that my rugs are not only beautiful but also tailored to fit the specific vision of each client. Additionally, I offer group workshops that allow clients to explore their creativity, learn about the design process, and create their own unique pieces in a collaborative environment.
I’m most proud of the successful workshop and the positive feedback I receive, which reflect my dedication and the trust my clients place in me.
For potential clients, followers, and fans, I want you to know that my mission is to empower others through creativity and a personalized touch. I believe in the power of collaboration and am passionate about helping you create spaces that inspire and delight.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
At the time, I was only pushing out 1 or 2 rugs every 3 months. I went to my dad and asked him how I could make a living from selling rugs because at the time I wasn’t selling rugs to create profit. My dad says to me, “ We aim high, and if it didn’t work we’ll try again”. Once I understood that I can push myself past my own limits, I found the beauty within the process.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
I guess you can say I was at the right place at the right time. I decide to be on a game show called “The Cube” on TBS in 2022. It was a leap of faith to even apply to be on TV because I didn’t think that I was going to be chosen. Ended up getting a few callbacks to put me on the stage with NBA player, Dwyane Wade, playing for the chance to win big. With my mom by my side, there’s nothing that I couldn’t do in that moment.
