We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kelsey Barnes. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kelsey below.
Kelsey, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
To be successful it takes commitment, being consistent, believing in yourself, and the support from your loved ones. There will be times where you feel like giving up, but only YOU can make yourself go harder. Don’t worry about if others are supporting, all you need is YOU.
Kelsey, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Kelsey Barnes, I am 25 years old, and originally from Montgomery, Alabama but I stay in Mobile, Alabama at this time. I am a college student, certified MUA, inspiring content creator, and business owner. I started getting into makeup in 2016, but started taking it serious in 2018 and decided to get certified, it’s not a license but it’s something. I have a cosmetic business selling mostly lip products and a few eye products, but because I am a full time student, I took some time off of working on my cosmetic business until I graduate in May and started focusing on being a content creator on TikTok, IG, and Facebook. I mostly post about makeup, and now I want to focus on fashion as well because I love clothes. I am also a brand ambassador for a few brands, but one of my favorite brands is Lashed By A. Marie, the CEO/my friend plays a big role because she is very supportive and most of the looks you see me doing I am wearing her lashes. As of right now, I do have virtual makeup classes to help beautiful women enhance their beauty. After I graduate, I do plan on having my business back up and running, and trust me it’ll be bigger than ever. In the future I plan on being a social worker with a cosmetic business and hosting huge makeup classes.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
When I first started my journey, I wanted to give up because I felt my work wasn’t good enough. But with the help of my supporters like my parents, grandparents, and close friends, they motivated me to go harder and still do. When I started taking clients, I wasn’t getting any clientele at all but I knew deep down I wanted to take it more seriously. But then COVID stopped things and that’s when I started taking content creating seriously and also when I started to taking my business seriously. Because we were in a pandemic, social media played a big role in my life and my business.
I know for a fact that when I graduate with my BA, I will be a know content creator with one of the biggest cosmetic businesses and a known MUA.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
When you start to take things serious in life and when you start a business you may see the true colors in plenty of people. This journey that I have been on, I have been in situations where I have lost friends and realized that they don’t actually support me. When you are a business owner, content creator, and a person who provides services people will try to take advantage of that. Learn that people are there for themselves and not you.
