We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kelsey Ammon. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kelsey below.
Alright, Kelsey thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
To be successful is a big topic and I believe that looks different for everyone. Some people think success means being recognized by others, receiving awards or becoming known to a wide audience. Others believe that success is associated with a dollar figure and to some, success could be related to lifestyle such as being able to step away from work, living slowly and spending time doing activities you love or being with family.
I think I’m still trying to define my version of success – as I catch myself in what I call dated patterns of “must add more to my plate, do more, etc in order to achieve success.” I truly feel we don’t need to do more necessarily in order to become more, and achieve more. I think we need less actually, and to allow more space in our lives for the efforts we put in previously to manifest.
My perception changed around success as I stepped into new networks online, meeting people who have achieved a lifestyle of balance and fulfilment without putting in 20+ years of hard work to do it.
Now I am doing my best to create the same, as to me, success will be being able to support myself and my family, without having to work “full time”, and to know I’m creating a positive impact on the world, helping others and being my true self.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
In college, I studied advertising, marketing and multimedia design. At the time, I went because that’s “what you do.” I had no real idea of what I wanted to “be when I grow up” and at the young age of 17, we were strongly encouraged to make these decisions.
I chose that industry because I liked making videos, editing photos, creating stories and sharing them. After graduation, I jumped back into what I knew best, which was hard work. The most accessible thing at the time was in retail and hospitality, so I worked 2-4 jobs at a time, juggling schedules and not leaving much down time for myself. I believe I ran on adrenaline for almost a decade.
Any savings I had often went towards experiences such as weekends away with friends or longer-term travel. I fell in love with travelling, and feeling free. Through my travels, I learned so much about myself and the world, it truly opened my eyes to other ways of living.
I had a line-in-the-sand moment when I was sweeping up the restaurant I was working at around 1030pm, exhausted from the day and thought.. “There’s gotta be more to life.” I truly felt that there was something more.. that we shouldn’t have to feel like we need to trade hours for dollars doing things we may or may not enjoy.
Funny enough, not long after that, someone I had been connected with on Instagram, shared her story which was similar to mine. She wanted a life of freedom, after working many odd jobs and long hours, she knew it was time to change because life is so precious. She valued living a healthy and balanced lifestyle, connected to her soul, and helping others. I thought “Wow there is others like me out there.”
Long story short, she shared her opportunity with me, which hilariously enough, was in the realm of marketing and online business. A full circle moment, I had come back to the marketing world I studied and disregarded so long ago because I thought it meant a corporate life.
That was almost 5 years ago now. And since then, I’ve learned so much about what is possible when you choose your own path and how to redefine what “work” is.
As a business owner now, I like to merge the body, mind and soul. I share products that align with a holistic lifestyle, I support other aspiring online business owners and established entrepreneurs to create systems in their business so that they create more space in their daily life to do what they love to do. In addition, I offer Astrology readings which can be applied to one’s personal self and business as well.
I believe that life should have balance, harmony and ease. What I do can support others to create this for themselves, in their bodies, in their minds and within their soul. We can utilize existing technologies, opportunities and systems to support us to create a life with more freedom without having to start from scratch.
What’s different about how I work with clients is that, we bring the soul into the room as a main pillar of our strategy. I discuss how to ensure you’re supporting your business from a health and well-being standpoint (i.e nutrition, hydration, mindset), systems (routine, organization, tech) and soul (your Astrological blueprint, cycles, challenges, opportunities)..
These 3 pillars bring in all levels of your being which is far more powerful than just doing the work. We must be vibrationally in-sync with our intentions, and soul purpose as well.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn that it’s only hard work and action that moves the needle in life/ business. In my first year of business, when I first went “full time”, I spent 12-14 hours/day working on my business. This was the opposite of the freedom I was seeking. I was still in the employee mindset, and scarcity mindset that had me working 4 jobs at a time the years prior.
I met a lot of really cool people along my new path, and they were not working more than 2-4 hours / day and seeing tremendous success!
My mind and perceptions continued to open to what is really possible when you have your heart and intentions in the right place when it comes to your business AND feeling connected to your soul.
I decided to turn inward and see what was happening that had my energy all out of whack and I wasn’t seeing progress. This is where the soul came in.
I had studied Astrology before but needed to dive in again. I worked much less on my business and more on myself, and understanding my soul.
What unfolded was a total transformation and realignment to my true self and true intentions in life and business. I’ve unlearned about “hard work” and discipline, and remembered the energy will move smoothly when you allow it, meaning, opportunities, clients, business and abundance can come in with little effort.
This is not me saying that no action is better, or doing less = achieving more, however, I am saying that there is a balance, and if depleting yourself while still feeling behind is your reality, it’s time to do less and bring your energy back into balance first.
This is all still very much a practise, as our society rewards hard work and always doing/ being/ creating more. I believe if we come back to the heart, the why, the intention and feel connected to ourself inside and out, then our actions will achieve more because they will be filled with more powerful and pure energy, not necessarily the amount of time we spend doing something.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Ah, yes! So many books and podcasts have supported me! Most of my “work” or transformation, has been around the topic of money and abundance. As a business owner, it is highly likely that money must be something you pay attention to, given the societal constructs in which we live and our economy.
A few books that have helped me to shift my mindset (remember the truth) around money is The Soul of Money – Lynne Twist, Spiritual Economics – Eric Butterfield, Busting Loose from The Money Game – Robert Sheinfield, Ask and It Is Given – Abraham Hicks.
All of these bring the soul, the spirit and the mystery of life into the picture. I personally am not one for the mundane, or keeping my focus solely on what’s in front of me (3D), I am here to live a magical life and I know there is so much more to it all, business, and otherwise, than just transactions and the physical.
These books and this type of philosophy have allowed me to have so much more fun in business, and truly witness magic as the right opportunities and clients come in, at the right time. I am able to see how my money mindset, my intentions, and keeping my energy in a positive space have helped me, my business and those who’s businesses I’ve helped to start and move forward.
