We were lucky to catch up with Kelseia Hertzog recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kelseia, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
Prior to becoming a yoga instructor, I had worked in the health and fitness community close to 10 years as a group exercise instructor and personal trainer. I decided to get my yoga certification to add another form of fitness to my training. I went into this training just wanting to teach the physical side of yoga. I never expected that yoga would help me change my perspective of the world, decrease my stress, and ultimately started my journey to healing and loving myself. This is why I’m so passionate about making yoga accessible to everyone. We all have the tools to start healing ourselves, sometimes the noise from the external world can be so loud that we cannot find the solutions, but they are within us. We just have to quiet the noise around us.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My love for the health & fitness industry started when I was in high school. I was tasked as the captain of the cheer team to come up with workouts and warm ups for the team. I realized then how much I enjoyed leading people through workouts. It was my outlet and continue to be that years later. There’s so much science behind exercise, yoga, nutrition, and how the body works. This is the approach I use with my clients. We are all different so that means one thing won’t work for everyone. It’s about individualizing your routines from the type of workouts you do, the type of food you eat, the tone of day in which you exercise, even the the type of yoga you like. We are more likely to stick to a routine when we enjoy it and we can work it into our schedule. That’s where my focus is when I train only clients. I am most proud of the evolution of my career. When Covid hit, it was scary for everyone. I didn’t know how I would maintain my business that is majority done in person. This is when I had to quiet my mind with clutter and outside noise. Covid was terrible, but it lead me to create a online version of my business through on demand yoga and fitness videos. I knew people still needed to be healthy during this so I created workout routines to complete at home with little to no equipment. My brand is centered around individualizing your health and fitness routine and making theses resources accessible to all people.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
I love listening to podcast. I listen to “On Purpose” by Jay Shetty. He talks a lot about becoming a better version of yourself through different things like mediation, self care, accomplishing your goals, empathy towards others, understand yourself and others. Just anything that can help you improve the quality of your life.
Books I recommend that have helped change my perspective of the world and myself: The Yoga Sutras by Patanjali, Energy healing for women by Keith Sherwood and Sabine Whittman, and the Yamas and Niyamas by Deborah Adele.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson I had to unlearn was thinking that I needed to be a certain way or having certain things in my life by a set age. I realized life will always bring some type of resistance and that ok, because that’s how we grow. I had to learn to be compassionate towards myself and accept and love myself during every stage and phase of my life.
