We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kelsea Tomczak a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kelsea thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you get your first job in the field that you practice in today?
I got my first job in the veterinary field after graduating from college. I started an externship at a veterinary clinic and eventually got hired there. When I decided to leave the clinic side of veterinary medicine, I started looking for jobs in sales. I made an account on LinkedIn and found PetDesk. I explored their website and social media accounts to learn more about them. I decided to apply after reading about what the company values and strives for. After a few rounds of interviews, I was offered the job.
Kelsea, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Growing up, I always wanted to be a veterinarian. As I got older, my goal changed and I decided that helping animals is enough. I went to a university, graduated with a bachelor’s degree, and passed the national board exam to become a licensed veterinary technologist. The work and pay were not aligning with my goals in life. Anyone in the veterinary field knows that vet techs are severely underpaid and overworked. I decided to try my hand at veterinary software sales. I am so glad I did. While I might not be using my licensure, I still get to help animals get the best care every day. I am incredibly proud of myself for trying something new and staying true to myself by remaining in the veterinary industry.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Pivoting from being a vet tech to working in sales was quite the adjustment. I had no experience in sales and I was scared it wouldn’t work out for me. I had a lot to learn and a lot to prove. I wanted to prove to myself and others that my choice to change careers was a smart one. Here I am a year and a half later and it’s safe to say that I made a great decision for myself.
I was recently promoted to an expand position where I am able to call current customers of ours and tell them about new products/features that we offer. I’m excited to see where this career in veterinary sales will take me.
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
I would never trade my time in veterinary medicine. I have such a passion for it. While I don’t necessarily use my degree every day, my experience in the field make me such a better sales rep. I can actually relate to the people that I speak to on the phone. I know exactly how exhausting and frustrating their jobs are. That’s where I come in to try to make their lives easier.
PetDesk has given me a way to improve pets lives from behind the scenes. I am able to give receptionists and vet techs more time in their day to dedicate to appointments, surgeries, and giving extra love to pets. It brings me joy to know that I can help take a load off of their shoulders and make their jobs easier.
