Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kelly Wilson-Prior. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kelly, appreciate you joining us today. Alright, let’s jump into one of the most exciting parts of starting a new firm – how did you get your first client who was not a friend or family?
I was showing homes to my husband’s best friend one day in Mesa and this home I showed was an Opendoor home where anyone can get into the home through their phone. There was a couple in there who was also looking at the home and I made small talk with them and found out they were months out from buying and window shopping on this particular day. They were really nice and funny and I felt a vibe with them so I was able to get the wife’s name, e-mail address and phone number and told them I would set up a buyer consultation with them when they were ready. I checked in monthly and when they were ready to go, we met up at a Starbucks where I did a buyer consultation and was then able to set this up on a custom home search and go over the home-buying process. We started looking at homes about a month after that and they were under contract for something pretty quickly. I would have normally never tried to get another client while showing a client a home HOWEVER I was with my husband’s best friend who is like family and I knew he wouldn’t care. Fun fact – I got this couple under contract for the home before my husband’s friend. We hit it off and I truly loved spending time with them. They were so funny and fun to be around. The wife brought me flowers and a thank you card when we did the final walk through. I couldn’t think of better people to call my first clients and I’m thankful to call them friends.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Do you know the beer PBR (Pabst Blue Ribbon)? I was with them for 9 years where I was a Regional Marketing Manager. After having my daughter Keira, I was laid off and took it pretty hard at the time. I knew it was probably for the best as traveling and late nights in bars wasn’t really for me once she entered my life. After interviewing for various marketing jobs, nothing ever gelled or felt right. I decided to take a chance on real estate as I loved the idea of being in business for myself and not answering to corporate America. My Mother-in-Law was a Realtor for 30 years. Her stories intrigued me and I kept coming back to real estate when I was job searching. After a lot of over-analyzing and long talks with my husband, I decided to enroll at the Arizona School of Real Estate in Gilbert. I got my license and signed on with West USA Realty and an amazing mentor who taught me so much about the industry. When I moved on from my mentor, I joined the Mister Rogers Homes Team where I have a few amazing mentors on the team, and haven’t looked back. I work with first-time homebuyers, investors and sellers and everything in between. The fun thing about this industry is that it is never mundane. I’ve been fortunate to work with a lot of amazing clients and the education never EVER stops and no day is ever the same.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
I tend to friend my clients on Facebook and/or Instagram as it’s a great way to stay up-to-date on what’s going on in their lives. I utilize my CRM to send quarterly check ins, send holiday cards and have done pop-bys. I also send clients a Comparative Market Analysis of their home as a way to check in so they have an idea of the current value of their home.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Referrals are the best! I have a great sphere of influence who have been wonderful with sending me referrals. Open houses are a great tool for meeting new clients and just talking to people wherever you go and letting it slip into the conversation that you’re in real estate.
