We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kelly Walling a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kelly, appreciate you joining us today. Can you tell us about a time where you or your team really helped a customer get an amazing result?
I worked with a young woman who is a college student, and she came to me with issues related to self-esteem, self-confidence, body image, taking care of her health, friendships and other relationships, figuring out what she wants to do next in her life, spending time alone, and happiness. She is a straight A student at an excellent university, and she has many things going for her and many options. She has friends, and some of them are healthy friendships. Some were not. She has had numerous accomplishments and accolades. I provided her a nonjudgmental, safe space to bring her concerns and tools to address them. We worked together to analyze her strengths, challenges, and goals. Then we dealt with her issues through work in sessions and actions I recommended and she took outside sessions. We were able to help her find solutions. We built her self-esteem, confidence, and body image. She started taking better care of her health. We gave her tools to manage unhealthy friendships and other relationships by setting boundaries and changing certain other approaches. With careful consideration and exploration of options, we defined her vision of her future; and she identified her goals for after college and started taking action to make them a reality. She learned to be comfortable spending time alone with herself. She has found happiness through the work we have done together. It is a wonderful thing to be able to help someone make so many changes and achieve such great results!

Kelly, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a life coach for girls, young women, and parents. For many years, I was a lawyer with my own successful practice. I practiced divorce and family law, probate, and estate planning. It occurred to me I was not fulfilled with my work and did not feel I was making the difference I wanted to make in others’ lives. I decided to close my law practice and start my business life coaching. I work with my clients to help them overcome challenges they are not overcoming and reach goals they are not reaching on their own. I provide one-on-one coaching to help young women and girls build self-esteem, emotional intelligence, self-confidence, resilience, and success; improve decision-making, goal-setting and leadership skills; and navigate challenges in areas like self-care, relationships, communication, body image, bullying, school, and life transitions. I help parents support their kids in building emotional intelligence, self-confidence, resilience, and other healthy thoughts, emotions and behaviors; improve decision-making, goal-setting and leadership skills; navigate challenges in areas like relationships, communication, body image, bullying, school, time management, money matters and life transitions; learn parenting skills that help them support their kids in reaching their maximum potential; increase parents’ self-confidence; and learn how to communicate with their kids effectively and build stronger relationships with them and other family members. I provide individual and family sessions. What sets me apart from other life coaches is the strength of the relationships I am able to form with my clients, depth and breadth of my experience and tools – much honed while practicing law, my ability to create individualized approaches for each client, and the results I consistently create with them. As a divorce and family lawyer, I helped clients not just with the legal aspects of divorce but also with the emotional challenges of parenting during some of the roughest times. I attended to the emotional needs of both the parents and the kids. I am most proud of the transformations I have been able to produce in the lives of so many clients. What I want others to know is that they don’t have to suffer alone, that I can help with reshaping their lives through meaningful work together and actions they can take outside our appointments. There are solutions, and I can guide in their implementation.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I think the successes I have had with my clients have had the biggest impact on my reputation within my market. They trust me and see what I have been able to do with them, and they have spread the word.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
At one time, I believed my past experiences created personal limitations over which I had no control. I did not believe I could break free from certain mindsets and create a present in which I was empowered to view things differently and choose healthier behaviors. I eventually figured out we have a great deal of control over our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors and have the ability to shape our present and future even though we have gone through very difficult experiences. I have more power to shape my present and my future than I thought! Many things influenced my changes in perspective and choices including working with a life coach who helped me tremendously, strengthening my faith, reading, coursework, sharing with others, and trying things anyway even when I was unsure doing them would have any impact.
