We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kelly /rachel Carlstrom/ Lee. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kelly /Rachel below.
Kelly /Rachel, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you come up with the idea for your business?
In the very beginning of our independent personal business journey, both of us spent countless hours working on our personal products, attending vendor events, and meeting some of the most beautiful local small business owners in the area. We were working out of our homes and relying on only social media, selling in-store at other local small businesses, attending events, and website orders for sales. After leaving the beloved boutique that closed, we joined forces and decided we wanted to have something local to Quincy. We shared dreams and ideas of having a permanent location to offer a “home” to local small businesses, where they can showcase their products and allow their consumers to find their products on a consistent basis. Whether it’s a new business looking to get off the ground or a business who is well-known, we wanted to join hands to help everyone grow and showcase their talent. We envisioned a space where handcrafted, high-quality products could thrive, supporting the local economy and small business families. Our goal was to create an ecosystem that would not only supports local businesses but also enriches the cultural fabric of Quincy. We have learned so much in the last year and we are so incredibly thankful for the support of our community, friends, and family.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Rachel Lee (Mae Bees Gifts and More):
My business name is directly linked to the beginning letter of my childrens names, (MAE). I was born and raised in Quincy, Illinois. I got into candle making as a way to explore my creativity while also seeking a calming and rewarding experience. The process of blending fragrances and pouring wax felt like an artistic expression that allowed me to create something beautiful and functional. Additionally, I was drawn to the therapeutic aspects of working with my hands and the satisfaction that comes from crafting unique candles that can enhance the ambiance of any space. As I experimented with different scents and designs, I found joy in sharing my creations with friends and family, and now I have the opportunity to share my candles with our community near and far.
Kelly Carlstrom (Superior Wreaths and Engraving)
During COVID the world was shut down and we needed an outlet. Something to give us positive purpose during a stressful time. My faith is big and I knew God would show me what to do. He did just that. I was inspired by a friend, Jennifer Mechaley on Facebook. I started making wreaths locally and it took off from there. I wanted to expand my product line and I started doing research and talking with business friends. It wasn’t long after, I bought my 1st 100watt CO2 laser. The precision and intricacy offered by laser engraving captivated me, and I saw it as an opportunity to bring my creative ideas to life in a tangible way. I was eager to learn how to transform everyday objects into personalized gifts and artworks that have a deeper meaning. The ability to engrave custom designs, from intricate patterns to heartfelt messages, allowed me to connect with people and create lasting memories. As I honed my skills, I discovered the joy of combining artistry with technology, and I quickly fell in love with the endless possibilities that laser engraving offers.
With candle making and laser engraving, The Engraved Hive was born.
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
How’d you meet your business partner? Funny backstory is that Rachel reached out to me (Kelly) one holiday season to purchase an ornament for her dad. I wasn’t home, so a porch pick up was completed. We never met face to face at that time. Fast forward, we briefly met in 2022 when we were both vendors in a local boutique. Shortly after the boutique closed, we connected one random night on Facebook messenger. As we continued to talked, we quickly realized we shared very similar business ideas and goals and scheduled a day meet to discuss the idea of opening our own place. We were both nervous as we didn’t know eachother well in the beginning. We took a leap of faith and went all in and its been the best business decision we both made. We have grown to be great business partners and best friends. At The Engraved Hive, our love for the Quincy community runs deep. It’s not just about the products we offer; it’s about the relationships we’ve built with our neighbors and fellow entrepreneurs. We cherish the creativity, diversity, art, and passion that our community brings to the table. Each product for sale in our store tells a story and reflects the talent that exists right here in Quincy. We believe in celebrating our local artisans and creating a space where their hard work is recognized and appreciated. Our storefront serves as a gathering place where people can come together, share ideas, and support one another. We are proud to be a part of a community that values collaboration over competition, and we look forward to continuing to foster that spirit in the heart of Quincy.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
We opened The Engraved Hive in October 2023. As time went on and business plans were being explored, it was difficult to do some of the things we wanted to do in the limited space we had. It was time to pivot. As we looked, we weren’t looking for any space. We needed the right space. We found our new location at 937 Maine street in Quincy and moved in July 2024. This delightful shop is more than just a retail space; it is a collaborative hub featuring products from over 31 local small businesses in the area, each bringing their unique flair and craftsmanship to the collection. From handcrafted jewelry and artisanal home goods to locally sourced food items and beautiful artwork. This space has allowed us the opportunity to host in-store events and highlight local makers. We have implemented fun activities for kids and adults. We have added Hive Huggies to our arsenal and these have been a huge hit with the kids, birthday parties, camps, and field trips. Our Hive Huggie Bar allows participants to pick out a stuffed animal, stuff their animal, and pick out clothes and accessories. Each animal comes with a birth certificate and a free Hive Huggie backpack. The Engraved Hive not only supports local artisans but also fosters a sense of community pride, making it a beloved spot for locals and visitors alike.
