We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kelly Palmer a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kelly , appreciate you joining us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
The name Boho Beach Break was created to describe my eclectic Bohemian decor style (mix of vintage and antiques) and the local beach break where I find most of the nautical treasures for my jewelry designs. For years our family has lived by the local Juno beach break. Our handmade bath and body products as well as jewelry designs are inspired by our simple beach and all-natural lifestyle.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Boho Beach Break was created after I started designing beach inspired jewelry using treasures from our local Juno Beach 10 years ago. Since then, it’s evolved to include all natural handmade aromatherapy products & Bath/Body items, Boho inspired jewelry & Vintage home decor accents.
I’ve always been a creative at heart and found different mediums to express my creativity. One creative outlet that I’ve always come back to is creating one-of-a-kind jewelry designs with little treasures I’ve found walking along the beach break on our local Juno Beach. Over the last 10 years I started to include Boho inspired gold and vintage jewelry designs in our collections.
Our company’s focus is to create products that allow you to Breath in & feel the Good Vibes. Our all-natural hand-crafted apothecary products are made with only the best organic and ingredients to help nourish your body and mind. A couple of our bestselling apothecary products are the anxiety ease essential oil roll ons (available in various scents) and our all-natural linen and room sprays (allergy and pet safe in various scents) available in travel sizes which makes both products perfect to take on the go.
We have been fortunate to have wonderful clients that continue to support our business thru referring others to us and placing additional orders. Our clients love that we also offer a Good Vibes gift box where they can customize their own gift for themselves or someone special. We can also customize all of our product labels to create gifts for special events such as baby showers, birthdays, and wedding favors. We love being able to offer an array of quality products for everyone.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Last year I decided to start setting up at a few local pop-up markets to gain more brand exposure and to find our tribe of customers. What I found was that it was very beneficial to be in front of new and existing customers to help build repour and allow them to get a better feel for the quality of our products. I personally enjoy meeting new customers and explaining our products while sharing our small business story. I’ve found that in person people can really see how passionate we are about creating only the best quality products for them to enjoy.
The connections we’ve made with customers at these pop ups has helped us add over 500 new followers on all of our social media platforms. It’s been amazing to see the response we’ve gotten from new clients who have shared how much they love using and wearing our products.
Can you share one of your favorite marketing or sales stories?
One marketing risk I recently took was placing our products in 30 giveaway bags for a small business networking group called the Small Business Babes business to gift to existing and potential new members at their next networking event.
I decided to gift our newly launched Soul Surfer anxiety ease essential roll on to gain more product exposure and receive feedback about the scent. To be honest this was the first time I’ve gifted so many products for free in exchange for marketing exposure and I wasn’t sure if it would pay off. The response from the Small Business Babes group was amazing! I received so many compliments about how much people loved the feel and scent of Soul Surfer. It led to multiple orders and making it our best-selling anxiety ease roll on to this day. We also gained new clients and made wonderful connections with other women owned small businesses.
As of today, I have two small business collaborations with Small Business Babes members in the works that should help increase sales and client engagement. I’m also working on adding our newest product in the next networking gift bag. I’ve learned taking small, calculated marketing risks like networking give aways can really pay off in the long run.
