We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kelly Moscinski. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kelly below.
Hi Kelly, thanks for joining us today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard.
At The Voicecaster, we pride ourselves on the ways we’ve been able to modernize to meet today’s standards while continuing the trusted and reliable “old school” ways of doing voiceover casting. Our approach is still hands on and personalized every step of the way. Though so much of the VO industry has become impersonal and virtual, we still connect with our clients, producers, ad agencies, etc. to really understand what they are looking for and find the best talent for each project. When it comes to auditioning talent, most VO casting has turned to online and remote audition recording. We offer that PLUS in-studio auditioning with our team so talent do not need to have a home studio and do not need to self-direct. In addition to directing the actors as much as possible, we also heavily prescreen based on a number of factors – not just the voice, but the acting ability, as well as the personal aspect as we like to get to know talent so we can provide our clients not only talented actors but people who are easy and fun to work with! That personal touch is often missing in voiceover casting since the industry move remote, so we have covered it both ways to ensure the best possible work on each and every project we dedicate our time to.

Kelly, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Kelly Moscinski and I’m the Owner and Head of Casting at The Voicecaster. I’ve been with The Voicecaster since 2009 and have owned the company since 2013 as the third owner. The Voicecaster was the first VO casting house established in 1975. We’ve been offering top notch VO services in casting, recording, and talent since then! I grew up with a love for theatre and the arts. I didn’t get involved in drama until high school, but fell in love instantly. When I went to college, I majored in pre-med to be a psychiatrist, but after getting heavily involved in the theatre department, I ended up switching my major to Theatre. I received my Bachelors degree in Theatre and my Masters in Writing. Since 2009, I’ve been involved in every aspect of voiceover including casting, engineering, producing demos, teaching, and more. I love my job and the different projects we get to work on in commercials, video games, animation, narration, etc. Every day is something new and that keeps my job fun and exciting!

Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
Managing a team can be so challenging, but so rewarding. Cliche, I know, but it’s true. In our business, my team has to be just that – a team! We all work together on every project. Yes, there are side projects that everyone works on individually but we all know what the others are working on at any given time, so we can provide the backup and support when needed. I will never claim to do everything right; but I can say that one key I’ve found to maintaining high morale is showing my team that I appreciate them. I say it and I say it often. I offer half day Fridays, so we’re not working a full 5 day week. And I’m lenient when it comes to needing time off – I try to honor any and all requests. My team is the backbone of the company and we all need each other to make the magic happen. Plus, we all want to work with others who have a positive attitude and enjoy their work as much as possible. I’m not unrealistic – we all have rough days, some projects are more pressure than others, which is why we need the team effort every step of the way.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The work is always changing. I love that I get to be creative in new and challenging ways daily. No two projects are the same so it’s always interesting and each has their own challenges and rewards. A project might be more draining, but the next one might be so fulfilling or a lot of fun to work on. Most are a combination and because of that, I’m happy to say I never get bored with my work.
