We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kelly Morfopoulos a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kelly, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start big picture – what are some of biggest trends you are seeing in your industry?
We are and have been in the wedding industry since 2009. Weddings trends come and go – there are some that are fun to jump on and some we advice avoiding altogether.
Champagne walls are a definite yes!
Trending editing styles for your photos are a hard no.
We love seeing mismatched bridesmaids dresses, floral table cloths, and champagne walls at weddings. Organic floral arrangements are another stunning trend that we love to capture.
When it comes to the style of your photography, we recommend staying classic and timeless so your wedding images never look dated. We’ve seen editing styles come and go (ahem, dark and moody) and try to keep ours always elegant.
Kelly, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Our studio opened in 2009 and we arrived in the wedding industry. Back then, the industry was young in Tampa and we were lucky to grow with it.
At the time, Pinterest didn’t yet exist and Style Me Pretty was a new blog and revolutionizing the world or weddings, inspiring couples with dream weddings and concepts many hadn’t yet imagined. We were featured on SMP many times and loved watching weddings shift from church hall gatherings to works of art.
As Tampa Bay wedding photographers, and have captured more than two thousand wedding at local venues like The Vinoy, The Ringling, Oxford Exchange, Armature Works, Powel Crosley Estate and many more.
Weddings are timeless and classic beauty and wedding photography depends as much on personality as it does skill. We love working with our couples for their weddings and later capturing their maternity and family photos for years to come as our couples become our friends.
It’s a very intimate profession and art. We’ve been very fortunate.
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
Our business, K&K Photography, was founded by my best friends, Jeff and Ana Kathrein. We met at boarding school and discovered photography together. Ana and I used to set up a makeshift studio in the chapel at school and spend our weekends shooting film and developing it in the darkroom together.
The quality of our early photos would embarrass us now, but it was an incredible educational experience to learn on old manual cameras and work with film that we hand-rolled and processed ourselves.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Our best source of clients is a tie between past client referrals and vendor referrals.
I love and very much believe in marketing, but referrals are by far the strongest source for us.
Because we’ve worked at most of Tampa Bay’s high-end venues, we can confidently share images galleries with couples from the venues they are planning to use. I think this helps couples to know we are familiar with their venue and it helps them to see examples they love – but having a referral from the venue and being on their preferred vendor list is how most couples come our way.
