We were lucky to catch up with Kelly Mockbee recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kelly, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
In 2019, I decided to start my own travel business as a way to supplement my love of travel. At first, it was just a side gig. I started with zero clients and figured it might be something I’d grow into after retirement. I honestly never imagined it would become more than that.
Then came Covid. I have no idea how I made it through, but like so many in the industry, I had to pivot quickly, shifting from mostly cruise planning to all-inclusive resorts and U.S. vacations while the cruise industry was completely shut down.
Fast forward to 2024: I was working full-time as a project manager in the corporate world when my company laid me off to hit their third-quarter earnings goals. That’s when I took a risk and a huge leap of faith and decided to bet on myself and my travel career. I doubled down on social media, networked like crazy, and kept building.
Today, I’m proud to say I’m still a full-time travel agent. I’ve taken my business from zero clients to a thriving career and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Kelly, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
There is nothing that I love more than waking up early on vacation and watching the sun rise over the ocean, the way it glimmers on the water, it’s so breathtaking!
My son and I used to make this a priority on every trip when he was little and we still do this today! This is what inspired the name “Glimmer Travel”.
Traveling is my true passion! From the back of my parents’ station wagon as a kid, I’ve always felt exhilarated by the adventures that await.
I plan Cruise Vacations, All inclusive getaways, group travel and destination weddings. I even had the privilege of planning my daughter’s wedding in The Rivera Maya last year!
Working with me brings benefits that go beyond just cost—like saving you time, reducing stress, and helping you make better decisions with confidence. Especially learning your preferences, we build a relationship and I understand your preference when your ready to book “that trip”

Time Savings: For future trip, I handle the research, planning, and booking, saving you time. I’m sure this is your preference, I’m a control freak too!
Exclusive Deals: Agents may have access to discounts, perks, or upgrades that aren’t available to the general public.
Personalized Service: I can tailor trips to your needs, whether it’s a honeymoon, family vacation, or adventure tour, creating a seamless and enjoyable experience.
Problem Resolution: If something goes wrong—a travel agent can help resolve problems quickly, often with more influence than a solo traveler. Again, perfect with @profmelissa
Bundled Packages: Travel agents can create all-inclusive or bundled packages that simplify logistics and may reduce overall costs.
Travel Insurance and Documentation Help: They can guide you through requirements for visas, vaccinations, and insurance, ensuring you’re well-prepared.
You still have control: You still have access to your booking to do all the same things you normally would if you book yourself, excursions, dining, drink packages, spa, whatever! I can make your payments for, or you can make them with a quick link, and I will notify you and notify when upcoming final payments are due.
No additional cost: My services are always free, and you pay the same amount you would if you book direct.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Trust, consistency and communication. I may not aways have the answer, but I will dig until I find it and advocate for my clients no matter what!

Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
Funny enough, it’s very economical to start a Travel Business, I actually partner with a great host agency that lets me sign up new agents and even mentor them! It’s so amazing to help new agents along.
