Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kelly Miller. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Kelly thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about a time you helped a customer really get an amazing result through their work with you.
I’ll never forget the look on one of my clients’ face when I gave her matching, hyper realistic 3D Areola tattoos post mastectomy. This one specific case hit home, hard, because she was my age and had a baby boy. This woman had undergone invasive cancer treatments and was supposed to not survive. But she did. She underwent many treatments followed by a double mastectomy, and more treatments, and she persevered. As a single trying to work mother, she was going through it all. Once I met her, we instantly connected, and she gushed out every detail of her journey. I listened intently as I tattooed, astonished by everything this woman has gone through and she still manages to smile and laugh. Once we finished up and she stood up to look at her new breasts in the mirror she immediately started crying. This was the final part of being able to leave the sickness behind her. She wasn’t sick anymore, and now she didn’t look it either. She could look in the mirror and love herself again. Feel whole again. This memory I will forever hold in my heart.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I started out my career as a cosmetologist doing hair and make up. I worked in salons for a few years and quickly realized it wasn’t for me. Then I made my move to the indie film industry for some years and I loved it. Big city life and something different everyday, it challenged me and help build my ability to problem solve. Especially when it came to small Brooklyn apartments in the dead of summer with no AC and close ups on actors that need to look like they are in a chilly attic. It was a true test to my attention to detail. And it all helped form who I am as an artist today. After that I apprenticed in a local tattoo shop for a few years, and I knew I was meant for that life but not exactly. After a few supportive words from a friend of mine I was able to combine my love for tattooing, helping people find the beauty in themselves. And now I have my own studio, Beauty and the Brow, in Southwick Mass, where we offer an array of beauty services that you won’t find in the average salon. Our services range from Permanent Makeup, paramedical tattooing such as areola reconstruction, to spa services like facials, spray tanning and full body waxing. We love having bi monthly makeup classes to help teach people how to do special event makeup at home, and we make it a fun night out, offering instruction, take home samples and of course light bites and music. We help people find peace and love that they otherwise wouldn’t have with their self image and the confidence they gain is priceless. Whether they are battling an autoimmune disease like alopecia or undergoing Cancer treatments that can both cause hair loss, having permanent makeup can build your confidence back up after such a change. People are my drive. It makes me so happy to see the look on someone’s face after giving them the gift of eyebrows or eyeliner, which can make someone who lost their lashes have a sense of balance back in their face.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Social Media was not some thing I was looking in forward to doing. It just was not my thing(Or so I told myself). As I started to get busier, I realized that most of my clientele it was not only worth of mouth but people that would follow me from comments I maybe posted on somebody else’s page that they are friends with. The importance was clear, and I needed to be more Involved or else I’d miss a large audience. When I started to feel overwhelmed, i felt backed in a corner. Then one day I was talking to my sister about it, and how I knew the importance of it all but I just didn’t have the time. Luckily, my sister Jenn, who has full faith in everything that I do, agreed to help out. She saw the growth of the business, and what I was doing to help others, and she wanted to help support me and also be a part of the mission. Since then, which was 2 years ago, we are now a team and are able to make sure that all clients get attention from every angle, whether it be interest in any of our services or questions on the healing process, booking etc. She’s been so amazing as far as writing posts and keeping content fresh and new. I suggest that any business owner get on social media, that’s a whole platform of people that you may otherwise miss if you aren’t. Having a social media manager is absolutely worth the investment. Finding someone that can make posts and send a welcome message to your new followers, it’s that personal touch that really makes it special.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Besides investing in my social media manager and I would definitely say the most effective strategy for growing my clientele is investing in some sort of non digital marketing. I’ve always heard that you don’t need to pay for ads on social media platforms so I steer clear of that. I already have a form of advertising with my social media manager. So what I ended up doing is investing in a small column in a local magazine. Magazines are something that only a certain group of people still get and I was able to tap into that market, who are usually not on social media. Doesn’t have to be a large amount, and always set your advertising budget to not exceed what you can afford. You don’t want to be in a hole to get your name out there!
