We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kelly McGee. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kelly below.
Alright, Kelly thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
I created Aesthetics By Kell for women. I wanted to create a space where women feel comfortable and confident. The entire mission behind the business is uplifting women and that mission guides every decision I make. It gives my business a moral compass that guides the products we sell, how we advertise, how I manage my employees, and so much more. We offer clean skin care, beauty brands, and home goods all created by women-owned brands. We emphasize eco-friendly and environmentally conscious brands. I try to uplift women by supporting the women-owned brands we work with and offering healthier alternatives to our customers. As an Aesthetic RN, and soon-to-be nurse practitioner, I am able to use my knowledge of dermatology and aesthetics to source products that offer results. It allowed me to create my own line using ingredients that are both safe and beneficial. This in turn allows my customers to get real results that make them feel more confident in their skin. I hope this mission allows me to impact many women’s lives in a positive way.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am an aesthetic RN, meaning I am a registered nurse specializing in skin and facial treatments. I am also a student. I am currently getting my master’s degree as a nurse practitioner. I started the brand Aesthetics By Kell to provide my clients with various services, but my overall focus is helping them meet their skincare goals to feel confident. We currently have our own clean skincare line, a storefront & refillery in Bedford, PA, and an extensive online store. Additionally, we have a full medspa slated to open later this year. I am most proud of my opportunity to help women both in business and achieving their skin goals. I’m also really proud of our refillery and hope I can do my part for the environment and help others do theirs as well.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I started my career as pediatric intensive care unit nurse. There was a lot to love and a super impactful specialty for nursing; however, it is also very intense, stressful, and heartbreaking. After about three years in this specialty, I had to make a change. As rewarding as it was at times, the stress was not serving me or my personal life. I had to make the choice to change career tracks. I think leaving that career track allowed me to find aesthetics and allowed me to really explore my creativity as an adult. I wouldn’t have this business if it were not for that choice.
If you have multiple revenue streams in your business, would you mind opening up about what those streams are and how they fit together?
My husband and I purchased the building that my business is in. So our business has several revenue streams which I do think helps significantly with resiliency and gave us some extra “cushion” in the first few months. The building collects rent from my business, along with a tenant because it contains two apartments upstairs. We are opening an air bnb in the second apartment. In addition to the extra revenue from the building, I started a skincare line. Currently, it is our top-selling brand in the store and we just started offering it as a wholesale brand. We are now on Faire and Creoate and looking to break into B2B as an additional revenue stream.
