Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Mateo.

Hi Kelly, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
When my twins graduated high school & left the house I experienced “empty nesting” really bad. I felt like I had no purpose and didn’t know what to do with myself. I went into a dark place and had no motivation to do anything. My significant other suggested finding a hobby or something to I really like to do. I had to really think about that. I had spent so much of my life taking care of my little people that I had lost my identity in the process. So, I started making candles, then I started doing a little research into diy projects and holistic remedies. I’ve been a pharmacy technician for almost 20 years now & I see the first hand effect that these commercially made medicines can have on people & their health. Then I started playing around with things like making soap, body butters, seamoss etc. I realized I had a real passion with making things for people without the harmful effects that some of these commercially available products can have. Once I started down that rabbit hole I haven’t slowed down since. I found a passion in helping people with their health problems and also make them feel good in the process.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Of course not, is the road ever smooth? Lol, I know that if it’s worth having it’s never easy. I’ve had to deal with people doubting my work, doubting my products, however I know for a fact that anytime I make something for somebody and I put that jar of seamoss in their hand or I give them a sample of my body butter it makes all the doubts disappear. My son recently passed and I can honestly say it is the hardest thing that I ever had to deal with, but I know my son wouldn’t want me to give up my love for making things for people, so I try to press on in his memory.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a nationally certified pharmacy technician & have been throughout my entire pharmacy career; something I am very proud about. I love learning how different chemicals work and how they affect the body & what their different uses are for. I’ve worked in retail pharmacies, in long term care pharmacies and now I work in a hospital. I love talking with the patients & hearing their stories. I think what sets me apart is the fact that I’m personable. I don’t just talk to people, I get to know them, listen to their stories, build a rapport with them. Which in the long run helps to get to know the needs of these individuals.
