We were lucky to catch up with Kelly Loeffler recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kelly, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been one of the most interesting investments you’ve made – and did you win or lose? (Note, these responses are only intended as entertainment and shouldn’t be construed as investment advice)
I started like most photographers, photographing everything for everyone. So I bought a lot of backdrops, gear and props over the years. I no longer photograph with a studio set up. I love to capture pets and their people in their natural habitat, whether thats outdoors or in their home on the couch. I no longer used any studio things, except the occasional prop but sparingly. I love that I have finally found exactly what I want to photograph all the time, but I wish, for my storage room, I had learned sooner lol
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started in photography near the end of my college career going for a bachelors in fine art. I didnt start doing pet photography until moving away from home and falling in love with volunteering at local shelters and rescues.
I’m proud of how far I’ve come as a photographer, really finding my place as a outdoor pet photographer
I’ve worked with so many dogs cats and other pets through rescues and shelters that I find I know a lot of about different types and breeds and have a better understanding of how to get good photographs of eat pet without causing stress and anxiety
Have you ever had to pivot?
My husband and I have moved many times since getting married so I have learned to pivot each time basically starting over but with a better idea of how to run a business.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Instagram is where I spend all my time but it wasn’t always that way. I was slow to downloading and creating instagram and even slower to creating one for my business. Once I finally did and decided to really focus on pet photography I was able to find my people.
I remember following all the venues/photographers/ big names in my area and worrying all about the numbers. When I finally realized I needed to follow the people, the instagram dogs in my area and not worry about who shares my images or how many followers I had, thats when I got in my groove.
By following less people I can focus and engage with actual people. I love my clients and followers and have create such a safe place on my instagram business that I actually look forward to opening instagram each day to talk to those im created relationships with
