We recently connected with Kelly Lawler and have shared our conversation below.
Kelly, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I am 56 years old. I consider myself an emerging artist, and passionate about all things that help people connect, kindness, spirituality and community.
I got a BFA in graphic design back in the late 80’s and I was a graphic designer for about ten minutes. I hated it. After falling into technology, having a family and moving around the country, returning to Philadelphia, I had a pandemic, and then a spiritual awaking, thanks to an MDMA journey. It was about a month after that when I decided to pivot hard back to art, and seek an MFA at PAFA. You see in addition to spending several hours talking to my father who dies tragically when I was very young, I was gifted with a knowingness of how the universe works, and the support that I could let go of all the things I had been deeply conditioned to believe. So, I did. I stepped away from the corporate world, and a career in technology, and returned to art, leaning into and letting go of my traumas, my pain and the ways in which I had been taught the world works.
The knowingness that I life with is one that tells me to lead with my heart, with kindness and compassion and with the understanding we are all one. All the people, all the animals, all the plants, all of it around us, it is all energy and we are all of it, creating that which comes next, and learning along the way.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Developing zoning that both protects current artist spaces, and encourages creating more or including artist spaces within other building, integrating art closer to all – who doesn’t go into an artist studio and feel inspired to create – creativity is healing, at any level, and shifting our culture to prioritize it in ways that are easy shifts seem to be pathways to a happier culture across the globe.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My intention with my work is to help people feel kindness, grow kindness, and move closer to their own authentic selves through community, conversations of healing, and activation of spaces near us that could allow for more of all those fore-mentioned.
