Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kelly Lansing. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kelly, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
So many projects come to mind but the most recent project I’m really proud of is the podcast I co-created with @missredventure called I Love That For You! It’s a dopamine-infused podcast that celebrates the late bloomers and trail blazers of all walks of life. So many people have reached out to us that this podcast resonates with them and inspires, and at the end of the day, that’s all a content creator can hope for–creating meaningful content that resonates with an audience. You can check it out at linktr.ee/ilovethatforyoupod and follow along at @ilovethatforyoupod
Kelly, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a writer, creative executive, podcaster and producer from Buffalo, NY who has been in the industry for over a decade. I was most recently a development executive / EP at Reel One Entertainment. Prior to that I worked in Disney Branded Television Current Series on kid show favorites such as RAVEN’S HOME, HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL THE MUSICAL THE SERIES and BUNK’D. While at Disney I also got the chance to work on a stretch assignment in the writers room for the Disney Channel sketch comedy show HOUSE PARTY, which was a dream come true as I got to put the UCB sketch writing program I went through to good use.
I started my career working on productions of all shapes and sizes working in PA / coordinator / AP/ AD roles on shows such as DRUNK HISTORY, THE APPRENTICE, PAWNOGRAPHY and ANOTHER PERIOD as well as working as a development and casting producer on reality shows. Before that , got experience working in nearly every facet of the industry: interning at CAA, working in locations for film/tv crews, as well as working in product placement and production resources, film finance and marketing.
A strong collaborator, I’ve spent countless hours in joke punch-up sessions and writer room settings and enjoys helping others develop their ideas into television series — from pitch to pilot script. I’m a big fan of greenlighting yourself and going after passion projects–be it a documentary, podcast, book adaptation or comedy / dramedy series.
I am a Television/Radio/Film graduate of Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and have my MBA from Boston University’s Questrom School of Business.
Have you ever had to pivot?
During the pandemic I saw the entertainment industry becoming more and more a business as layoffs were rampant and divisions were cut left and right. I knew I needed to do something to set myself apart from the competition so that if I did find myself back in the studio system on the exec side one day, I could be in the room making the decisions of who was getting laid off instead of being at the mercy of those decision. I went back to school to get my MBA and am so glad I did.
Not unlike the pandemic with rampant layoffs and work stoppages, I also at the time of this interview find myself directly affected by the WGA / SAG AFTRA strike. I started a podcast, documentary project, Substack, refined existing scripts, and wrote two new ones during this time to build up my content, further my brand and to hit the ground running when the world gets a little more back to normal.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Telling stories and creating poignant, meaningful content that resonates with an audience has and always will be my main objective.
