We recently connected with Kelly Joshelle and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kelly, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear a story from back when you were an intern or apprentice. What’s a memorable story you can share with us?
Haha, I actually was just telling one of my model sisters this story… So a local artist had just put together a talent group of models and we had finally landed our first hosting event. We were so excited we were getting ready to find music dancing and taking pictures the whole time, etc. Fast-forward a few months, we ran into the dude whose party it was and he mentioned us getting paid — I’m laughing now haha— we were so confused! Having realized we just got played.
Since then, things have been handled but I say all that to say that we all start from somewhere and being at square one never lasts.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hey readers! My name is Kelly and I am most known for my modeling. I got into the industry via recruitment. I was a regular 19-year-old until one day I got a DM from a local talent agency and I accepted the offer like, “why not?” I’m a spontaneous girl!
I started off as a model, then became a talent manager, then picked up some photography, marketing, and graphic designing skills to help support my business and most importantly my community who’s looking for an outlet through the entertainment industry. I wanted to be a one stop shop for clients.
One thing that I tell others all the time is that you are never just ONE position so understand that your role may come with other demands. For example, for a model, you’re not just a model other days you may need to be an actor. You may need to be a dancer for music videos. You may even need to be a party host when needed! I even got the incredible opportunity with the Kansas City People’s Choice Awards to be a stage model/ award presenter!
When aspiring models work with me, I teach them all the need-to-knows. I’m gonna tell y’all a few now. So in order to be a professional freelancer, you must know the proper etiquette, how to network, maintain those networks, have a comp card, a wide variety portfolio, network, a little photography knowledge, and be teachable and a self-starter. Selling strategies and marketing skills are another big one, turn any surface into a billboard!
It’s my job to already know these things, and so I took classes regarding the skills that I 100% pass down to my clients.
I also take pride in allowing my clients to bring their kids if needed. Life/business shouldn’t stop because you have kids, especially considering they’re the ones we are bettering ourselves for.

What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
Working in the entertainment industry started off being something fun to do for the summer then quickly turned out to be the best paying job I’ve ever had. I literally feel like I’m being paid to be myself.
In order to get paid more, I had to add more value to myself. On a business side, I picked up skills such as marketing, graphic design, photography, etc. On a personal side I maintain my integrity, my commitment to growth, be a team player, be reliable and proactive, and I maintain professionalism.
You know the saying, “Success is when opportunity meets preparation.” Live by that.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?
When people like you as a person and your vision, they’re willing to invest in you. One of the selling strategies I learned that stuck with me is you’re not selling your product/services you are selling YOU. <3
