We recently connected with Kelly Garrett and have shared our conversation below.
Kelly, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
When I decided to start my business, my main focus was to educate people on taking care of their skin to achieve smooth blemish free skin, and help with hyperpigmentation, and other skin concerns. So Bare Skin was born.

Kelly, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have been a licensed Esthetician since 2017. My journey in the beauty industry started with struggling with my own skin concerns. Which lead me to watch countless makeup tutorials on YouTube on how to cover up imperfections. I got really good at it, so my aunt and sister suggested that I go to beauty school to learn more. I enrolled to Aveda Arts & Science Institute Charlotte. While there, I fell more in love with skin care. Wanting to get started on my career right away, I took a job as a Wax Specialist after graduating. While I found a new love for waxing, after four years I was ready to get back to doing facials. So I left the company I worked for and started So Bare Skin.
Right now, my most popular service is full body waxing and I also offer limited facial services. Hopefully in the near future I would like to expand my service list to include other modalities, like laser hair removal and microneedling. My main goal is to help my clients with ingrown hair, hyperpigmentation, and fine lines and wrinkles.
I have been told that I have a very gentle touch, especially when preforming wax services. I like to take my time and some people really appreciate that, especially those who are new to waxing. I think of how I liked to be treated as a client. I would want someone gentle and patient and I definitely pride myself in that.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Word of mouth has been the best source of new clients for me so far. I offer a discount to my clients as well as anyone they refer to me. I also gained some of my clients from former fellow estheticians who I had worked with previously.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?
Starting out I funded everything out of pocket. Any tips I that got while at my previous job I would save to buy supplies that I would need. I also shared my first salon suite with a former coworker who had also decided to go solo. We split the cost of rent and supplies which really helped deviate some of the financial burden. Later on I did take a small business loan out to help with some things.
