We were lucky to catch up with Kelly Florence recently and have shared our conversation below.

Kelly, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s jump right into how you came up with the idea?

Meg Hafdahl and I met 23 years ago because of an X-Files t-shirt! We both shared a mutual love of the show and soon discovered we both loved the horror genre as well. We started a podcast called Horror Rewind and realized every week we were naturally gravitating towards talking about the science, history, and lore behind our favorite horror movies. This led us to write our first book, The Science of Monsters (2019) and we’ve recently completed the sixth book in the series coming out later this year!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

We are so proud of our The Science of Horror series including The Science of Women in Horror (2020) which was nominated for a Bram Stoker award, The Science of Stephen King (2020) which we got to write about one of our personal heroes, The Science of Serial Killers (2021) in which we explored true crime in horror movies and television shows, The Science of Witchcraft (2022) and the forthcoming The Science of Agatha Christie (2023.) We’re also excited to announce Goth Girls Guide to Travel coming in 2024!

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?

We absolutely love meeting people in person and online and sharing our love of the horror genre with them! It’s always a joy to hear from readers and even convince some non-horror fans to give the genre a try! We truly believe the horror genre builds empathy, is female-driven, and is more complicated than meets the eye.
