We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kelly Doering a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kelly , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’re complete cheeseballs and so we love asking folks to share the most heartwarming moment from their career – do you have a touching moment you can share with us?
As a Massage Therapist, I’ve always been passionate about researching natural remedies and using all my knowledge and skills for natural healing. My heartwarming story, comes from a personal true story on fighting cancer with cannabis. In July 2016, after an x ray was taken, my doctor discovered a tumor that was 14 and a half centimeters in my chest and I was diagnosed with Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. I wasn’t ready to start chemotherapy even though that was what the oncologist prescribed right away. My intuition and body gave me messages to fight cancer with cannabis. In August 2016, I moved from Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Colorado Springs, Colorado so I would have legal access to cannabis while I fought Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. My story is about using the cancer fighting cannabis oil protocol, which is taking a gram of cannabis oil a day, every day for over 3 years. In my book, Rocky Mountain High Priestess, One Woman’s Courageous Healing Journey Using Cannabis To Fight Cancer, I include my experiences being on a high dose of THC, the history of cannabis being used in medicines in the past, working in the cannabis industry and my experiences with the medical industry.
Kelly , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’ve always promoted self awareness through bodywork, yoga, meditation, energy work, and astrology. I am passionate about practicing Hawaiian massage, or Lomi Lomi, shamanic journeys and yoga to get in touch with your body, mind and spirit. As a massage therapist for 20 years, I’ve helped support people through many healing journeys. By assisting people with shamanic journeys, I activate multi dimensional healing for others and help on many levels. After my healing journey fighting cancer with cannabis and going into remission in January 2020, I wanted to share my experiences. so I wrote my first book on my true story called, Rocky Mountain High Priestess, One Woman’s Courageous Healing Journey Using Cannabis To Fight Cancer. After going into remission, I also started my own massage business, Rocky Mountain High Priestess in July 2021. I’m set a part from other massage therapists by my 20 years of massage and holistic healing experience and becoming a published author in February 2024.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I was practicing massage therapy before I moved to Colorado in 2016. While I was fighting cancer with cannabis, I was on a large dose of THC and I also had to go through chemotherapy. My body was in a weaker state and my intuition told me to take a break from doing massage therapy so I got a Marijuana Support badge so I could work for a cannabis grow. I had to pivot my career as a massage therapist, to give my body a break and not be exposed to as many people. Working with cannabis plants was extremely healing because cannabis oil was my medicine. I felt like the environment supported me fighting cancer with cannabis oil and I was able to fully focus on my own healing. After I went into remission and was able to practice massage therapy again, it also gave me more of a respect and realized how important receiving bodywork can be.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Growing up, I was taught that cannabis was a drug and it was compared to cocaine, methamphetamines and other hard drugs and because of how the federal government has cannabis scheduled, its easy to go along with those beliefs. I guess, I’ve always questioned things and after being exposed to cannabis when I was a rebellious teenager, I wanted to see how bad it was. I felt like it wasn’t as harmful as other substances though. I used cannabis to help with other ailments before I moved to Colorado, like; depression, anxiety and ptsd. I had to sneak around while I used it illegally in other states and it made me feel like I was still doing something bad even though it was helping me. So, after I moved to Colorado and it was legal and I could use cannabis without sneaking around and it felt so strange at first. I had to relearn that cannabis was legal and not considered as dangerous as other substances. And then after I researched the healing benefits of cannabis and experienced the healing benefits personally, fighting cancer with cannabis, I was blown away by how different I thought of cannabis now.
