We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kelly Bonnez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kelly, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Who is your hero and why? What lessons have you learned from them and how have they influenced your journey?
When it comes to my career and business, my husband, Colby, is my number one hero. My business simply would not exist without him. I have watched him pivot careers and dive into a world where he started out as a small fish in a big pond, where he faced a giant learning curve. He worked so hard to not only be able to do his job correctly, but to excel to the point where other higher-ups in the company that employs 65k+ people, where requesting to work with him. He has gone through a grueling review process twice a year for five years and every single time he gets exceptional feedback and sometimes is in the top 5% of employees to score as high as he does. It is through the relationships he builds, diligence, eye for precision, and creative strengths that he is able to do this and continue to excel.
Watching him be so successful at work, and enjoy it, has always inspired me to find my passion and to work hard. When I made my career switch in to photography, Colby was not only the ultimate cheerleader, but he helped me get things off the ground without me asking him. He took so much initiative to get things into place on my behalf, that it was almost like having a business partner.
Since the business has picked up, Colby continues to support me with childcare needs as sometimes I need to go to a shoot during the work day when our almost-2 year old daughter is at home. He will sacrifice his work to make sure I can go to these shoots, while taking care of her. Many more times than once I have come home from a shoot and Colby has had dinner all taken care of and a warm plate ready for me to enjoy.
I am so grateful to be married to someone who inspires me so much with his work ethic and positive attitude. He is a true partner in my work and the best life partner I could ask for.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
I have found both word-of-mouth and Yelp to be the best source of new clients!

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
It is the most rewarding for me to be able to capture a client’s special moment, loved ones, or milestone. I know that the pictures I take will be looked back on over the years to come and it makes me so happy to know that I was able to be an integral part of a memory the client will treasure for the rest of their life.
