We were lucky to catch up with Kelly Ali recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kelly thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
For years smooth texture has been the focus of fashion, which leads most to believe beauty IS smooth hair. This simply is not true. Beauty is in every shape, texture, and form! My passion project is showing people how to embrace their natural texture. There is NOTHING more fulfilling than educating a guest how showcase their curls and their response is “Oh my gosh this is MY hair?! I can’t believe I have this much bounce in my hair!” Embrace your waves, curls, coils people!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
60% of humans have some form of movement in their hair, yet 15% know how to work with it. Growing up being the only one with curly hair the struggle to understand how to work with my texture was real. I would go in to a salon asking for a cute chic, French bob but end up with an afro that Foxy Cleopatra would rock. This inspired me, as a hairdresser, to empower people to embrace their natural texture. Beauty is present in every shape and form!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The absolute best part of my career is the fact that every head of hair is a canvas to create into art! You are able to enhance, shift, lighten, enrich hair to create different vibes on each person. It’s beautiful to explore how hair blooms confidence in your guest.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Hairdressing is not for the weak. Our industry has been painted as a “cute” job for individuals to “just play with hair”, however, there is a lot involved. We work with chemistry to create customized colors, balancing Ph levels to nourish healthy hair, design angles and shapes with geometry, understand how to hold the correct value of tension in order for the layer balance to fall correctly. We are not pretty faces curling hair all day, we are artists, therapists, scientists, educators, researchers, entrepreneurs, mentors, and pupils.
